Baby names

Wavering about Conrad

Baby due in 6 weeks. We were all set with Conrad, then I went off it a bit... then I came back round to it... and now I'm wavering again. It's got to the point where I'm starting to hope that we have a girl just so I can avoid the issue.

Pffft.

I'm worried I will regret choosing Conrad in a year or two.

He'd be a Conrad George, I think. Our "backup" names are Frederick and Rufus (DH less keen). Thoughts?

Sorry but I'm not fond of it. I like Frederick though.

TallulahBetty · 25/08/2013 14:23

Connor?

Sorry, I don't like it. I keep thinking about Conrad the Impaler :(

BlueStarsAtNight · 25/08/2013 14:39

I'm afraid I'm not a fan either, but you'll never get something everyone likes! I do really like Frederick. What is it about Conrad that you aren't sure about?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 25/08/2013 20:20

It's an unusual interesting name and I've never met one in rl. Chances are calling out his name in a playground or across a store you won't get a clutch of other Conrads running up to you.

Anyone else you know expecting around the same time? How would you feel if she had a boy before your EDD and said sheepishly,
"Actually MrsHoratioNelson, hope you don't mind but we've decided to call him Conrad?"

NotAnotherPackedLunch · 25/08/2013 20:22

I like Conrad George.
Much better than Frederick or Rufus.

MrsHoratioNelson · 25/08/2013 20:51

Thanks. Wavering because Conrad is not a baby name. But, I would never give a child a "baby" name that didn't work as a grown up, so I am clearly being silly.

I like it because its unusual without being odd. Donkeys you're right that I'm unlikely to meet another one in the playground. DH spent his whole school career being known as Firstname + initial of surname because he was one of about 4 in the class.

I do understandthat it's a bit of a marmite name - MIL is going to hate it Wink

And I think I would be a bit cross if someone wanted to use Conrad - even though that's unlikely!

Chottie wasn't it Vlad the Impaler?

Well this name is something you keep coming back to so you probably feel comfortable with it. We chose a name for DS almost instantly yet by my EDD I was starting to ponder it.

Now wondering what you're considering for a DD's name. Smile.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/08/2013 21:00

I really like it, although I also had a boss called Conrad, so would have felt a bit awkward about using it (he wasn't particularly evil, just a bit of a dolt)

And I named my DD a fairly 'old lady' name and spent the first couple of months of her life convinced I'd made a mistake. She's now 4 and it suits her down to the ground. Baby time is short...

ShadowSummer · 25/08/2013 21:00

I really like Conrad. But sadly DH doesn't, so it's off our shortlist.

I like it much better than your back-up choices.

Never heard of Conrad the Impaler either.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 25/08/2013 21:03

I know one Conrad. He's 43 and a bot of a rogue!

I knew a Conroy at school who was a lovely gentle chap and still is (my sister knows him).

I'm not keen on either tbh. Conrad especially sounds quite harsh to me.

MrsHoratioNelson · 25/08/2013 21:33

Donkeys girls names were easy, decided almost without the need for discussion - Beatrice Lydia or (if she pops out and isn't a Beatrice) Claudia Elodie.

It will amuse you to know that lately I have preferred Claudia - I guess it is the late pregnancy hormones after all, rather than a genuine dislike of the name Conrad Grin

hawkmcqueen · 25/08/2013 21:36

I know a Conrad, he's two with a mop of blonde curls, he makes it a sweet name :-)

JacqueslePeacock · 25/08/2013 22:53

I like Conrad. I don't think Claudia sounds right with Elodie though (too many d sounds) - Claudia Beatrice sounds lovely though.

Anjou · 26/08/2013 00:08

Conrad is a great name. Cool, strong, unusual but not unheard of. To my ears, the pairing with the mn George doesn't quite flow, but that's just me. Smile

I love it. I would put it in the same category as
Magnus
Rex
Hector
Rufus
Kirill
Roman

Hope that doesn't put you off! I love all of those names too.

Good luck OP! Smile

Anjou · 26/08/2013 00:09

Oops! You already mentioned Rufus as an alternative, OP. sorry!

Hooya · 26/08/2013 10:40

Love it. Exactly agree about unusual but not a difficult or odd name, if you see what I mean.

MrsHoratioNelson · 26/08/2013 11:03

Coconutty yes, it would bother me. Part of th reason I'm not wild about Frederick is that I'm not mad about Freddie and you can't stop people callin a child Freddie if his name is Frederick. Conrad is just, well, Conrad.

Now also doubting Claudia Elodie Hmm

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 26/08/2013 11:11

Conrad is interesting. I don't know any.

I think it could grow on me.

Otherwise I love Rufus.

Claudia is great. I prefer it to Beatrice.

squoosh · 26/08/2013 11:11

I really like Rufus.

No too keen on Conrad, reminds me of Conrad Black.

Beatrice Lydia
Claudia Elodie
What stylish names Smile. Personally I wouldn't put Lydia together with Elodie but imo the other combos work.

CheeseFondueRocks · 26/08/2013 11:36

I like Frederick. It was in our boy top 3.

yummymumtobe · 26/08/2013 12:08

I know 2 baby conrads. It is cool!
