Would anyone recommend amnio for 1:10000 downs risk?

This is my result and I'm wondering whether it's worth an amnio or CVS

I thought it was low and then saw others with results of 1:300000 etc and got worried!

Has anyone had this result and still had a DS/DD with downs?

This is my first pregnancy and I don't know if this is the NHS version of low risk or simply low risk. I'm asking for advice, but thanks for the "helpful" response.

This is low risk, I definitely wouldn't consider an amnio for that.

Does your trust offer the harmony test? Some of your baby's blood will be circulating in your blood, so a blood test can check for downs.

Ask your midwife then if they don't offer it see if you can do it privately.

I had a 1:750 chance with my ds2. I was concerned but we decided not to have an amnio and he was fine. I think generally it seems to be frowned upon to have an amnio if your chance is higher than 1:50 or something but I understand you being worried. I was. Your chance is tiny and I did hear lots of people telling me they had 1:3 or higher and still had a baby without downs. Just try to be positive and put it out of your mind.

Of course people have lower odds. Translate it to a percentage - 0.010%

As far as flaming goes, its a pretty gentle one, but I do think it was a tactless question - a quick google would tell you that those are very low odds.

No I would not consider it for such a low risk - the risk of miscarrying a healthy baby as a result of the amnio is higher than the theoretical risk of downs

It would depend on your intentions I guess.

Are you planning an abortion if the result is for Downs? If you're not considering this option then what difference will knowing make? Do you really want to take the risks involved for nothing except knowing this answer a few months earlier?

If the abortion option is your reason then I guess it's something you do need to know.

Live birth rate for Downs is lower than that. I can see why our trust only says "high" or "low" - and i think their cutoff is about 1 in 100.

NHS recommend amnio for a risk of 1:150 or greater risk.

Remember generally an amnio runs a risk of miscarriage of about 1%.

A 1:10,000 risk of Downs is a lot less of a risk than a 1% risk of miscarriage.

Personally, I think you would find it very, very hard to find a doctor who would perform an amnio with those screening test results.

Miscarriage risk is usually quoted at around 1:150, so you can see that the odds of miscarriage are much, much higher than the odds of the baby having Down Syndrome.

You could look into the Harmony Test if you wanted a more accurate non-invasive test.

OP you have been given a risk that out of 10,000 babies your baby would have downs.

If you're that concerned with those odds get an amnio / cvs / harmony done privately.

Do you suffer with anxiety? I'm asking as your reaction to 1:10,000 does not come across as rational...!

There will almost certainly be someone somewhere who has had that result and gone on to have a baby with Down's, because a 1 in 10,000 risk is not zero...it's 1 in 10,000. It's very, very unlikely that your baby has Down's, but not impossible.

It's also pretty unlikely - but not impossible - that further testing might cause you to miscarry.

It's worth considering what action you'd want to take if you did get a definite positive result from further testing. If it would just be for information or reassurance, would it be worth the risk?

Not with those odds I wouldn't. Think about it - you're one of 10,000 people standing in a field. The chances of you being picked out are incredibly low. Balance that tiny risk against whatever risk there is in having an amnio (can't remember what it is but there is some).

I didn't have an amnio with dcs 1 and 2 and I didn't have such good odds as you (maybe about 1,200). I did have one with number 3 because the odds were lower - about a couple of hundred.

My results were 1:40. We had an amnio. It was incredibly stressful both before and after the amnio. My son didn't have any problems.

Your results are nothing to worry about at all.

I would be surprised if you can get a dr to do an amnio with those numbers.

To put your mind at rest, I had the Harmony test in my first pregnancy, at Harley Street, and a negative result (that is, the baby does not have Downs) is expressed as a 1:10,000 risk. So your bump should be just fine!

I was given 1 in 250 (was 44!). Risk of spontaneous miscarriage was quoted at 1 in 200. Logic dictated (to me) no amnio. DD is fine.

Put it this way.

1:10,000 risk means that your risk is 30x higher than the person with a 1:300,000 risk (are you sure? I didn't think the odds got up into the hundreds of thousands for anyone).

1:150 risk of miscarriage means that your risk of miscarriage due to the amniocentesis is 67x higher than the risk that your baby has Down Syndrome.

If you're worried about the first one, it makes sense that you should be twice as scared about the second.

(Personally, I think 1:10,000 is very reassuringly low risk and I'm sorry you're feeling anxious - it really is a very good result).

Like I say it's my first pregnancy and I don't know all the context around numbers. Some people can spend a lot of time quoting measurements - I wouldn't know what they mean, which is probably why I ask the doctors so many questions. I asked them this too, and they said low risk, but I got home and saw there were all sorts of odds out there.

It depends on your age and what screening test you have had done as to the accuracy of the test

If you want a closer to definite answer without risking your pregnancy then a NIPT or Harmony test might be worth looking at

Is the 1:10000 result from the combined test or from an NIPT test such as Harmony?
I was told by our doctor that the best result the Harmony gives is "less than 1 in 10000. So don't do the Harmony if you want to see something different.
However, if those results are from the combined test, consider the test's false negative rate.
