to only bath my baby once a week?

According to my dear mother I am, I "ought" to bathe him more than once a week. If he's dirty or had sun cream on or something I bathe him more than that. I give him a top and tail wash with a flannel once a day, and of course a wipe down either end when its dirty. He's 6 months. I used to give his sister a bath every night at the same age and she had excema. My baby has lovely skin with no excema at all. Its not like he smells or anything

This is fine and good for babies prone to dry skin. People do tend to bath their babies far to much. My doctor told me once or twice a week is fine. unless thay pee all over themselves or something.

I give my baby a quick bath every night because he enjoys it, and its part of his night time routine. He also has beautiful skin.

I do think that a bath can ensure all residue of dirt, poo etc is washed away but it's horses for courses - hardly "BU" not to

YANBU I can't be doing with washing them every 5 mins at all.

People are always horrified it's as if there is an unwritten rule that they must have a bath every night.

So I don;t let on

I am a once a week bather too - the dcs not myself

I have the same system as the OP. My dds also have eczema and water definitely aggravates it even with loads of emollient.

If they seem particularly grubby I bath them but definitely not nightly or even several times a week.

no i bath dd 2.6 years who has a little Eczema only 1-2 a week, i wash her down below, face, hands everyday, or just give her a quick sprinkling with the shower not emerse her in a bath all the time.

not at all. mine have only ever been bathed weekly, sometimes less unless they are particularly smelly/dirty

they don't need washing frequently, and it's bad for the skin anyway

people often comment on my kids lovely skin. dunno whether it is because i bath them only weekly and never use chemicals on them, or just hte luck of the draw but i like to think it's the former

I bet he smells of lovely baby! I bath my ds every other day because he loves it, I don't do it because I ought to. When I was growing up we had a bath once a week.

YANBU; modern thinking is that they really don't need to be bathed more often than once or twice a week and that a daily top and tail (and armpits as they can get quite cheesy) is fine.

Certainly they shouldn't have anything other than water on their skin for the first month.

We didn't bath my DC3 until he was nearly two weeks old

I hardly ever wash mine and they still have eczema so not always a link there

Have a look here for some information to pass onto your mum :0)

It's worth joining as well as they have regular competitions and need product testers...and me and my bub are in the latest newsletter

Oh no YANBU.

They don't explode or anything if they are not bathed every night.

DD had her first full bath at 3 weeks old. She hated it so much she didn't have another until 7 months. She's 6 now and has one bath a week - she does have to wash her hands/face/bum daily though.

Nobody has ever said she smells or looks dirty, not even my horrible interfering exMIL, and believe me she'd say.

If I had my way dcs 2.2 and 11mo would only be bathed once a week unless dirty etc.

YANBU.

DD is 6 months and she only gets bathed once a week (and she also goes swimming once a week). I have bad skin so am cautious about what I use on her; even when she has a bath we rarely put anything in it. It doesn't help that she tends to scream the place down when she has a bath which puts us off doing it more often...

YANBU. Absolutely fine and better for their skin.

When DS was born, mid december 2005, it was bitter, bitter, bitter. Had heating on full bore, 24 hours a day and we were still cold. I couldn't get a bath to stay hot enough, even when it was next to the fire, so DS went at least a week between baths, only washed him top and tail.

He's fine!

Carikube DS did go through a screaming down the house thing too actually after he was 4 months, so I got in the bath with him... he soon chilled out about it!

god no YANBU

my boys get bathed once a week. Mostly on a Sunday night before nursery the next day. If I remember. They both love the bath, but once a week is enough for me having to deal with them both and a flooded bathroom!

Other than thats its an odd wet wipe on the hands and face and bum

My 2 children get bathed 1-2 times a week. My son who is now 6 had severe eczema as a baby and i was told by my GP to limit bathing as it washed away the natural oils in his skin. So YANBU at all. Also i have an immersion heater which costs a fortune to put on too.

Wow, I'm glad I read this thread !!!

I feel guilty that I don't bathe my littl'un more often, usually every 3 nights or so, but now don't feel quite so bad.

I used to bath DS1 every night and he also had excema, so the GP told me to bath him less frequently. I have only ever bathed DS2 every few nights.

YANBU

yanbu I bathe mine once or twice a week. Sometimes she loves it and other times she doesn't. She's nearly 3 and last week when I announced bath time she took the mannerisms of a teenager and exclaimed "I get bathed every single night!!!"
I couldn't stop laughing at her, such a madam!!!

errr, must be just me who thinks this is a bit skanky then! I know they don't need a daily bath but surely by a week they must be looking fairly grotty?

It doesn't m atter one bit how often you bath your baby. I'm surprised anyone really cares.

(Although daily bathing with emollients is often very very good for babies with eczema.)

Report
NormaSknockers · 30/09/2009 21:04

I think that's fine. The DC generally have a bath every other day but if DH isn't here to help (I have problems with my back so find it very difficult to lift them in/out the bath) then they don't tend to have one. Obviously if they're in need of one then I don't have a choice I have to work round it!

We usually do teeth & face wash etc!
