In thinking that actually facebook is quite good and not really a sign that we are all going to hell in handcart

As this morning while completeing my usual domestic tasks and making a cake. I updated my friends around the country (and outside it), with a pic of dd2 holding herself upright for the first time and also exchanged messages with a beloved school friend now back in the former Yugoslavia. I mow know she is happy and well and married with children and even what they look like.

Living far away from my friends with very small children and not being able to drive Fb has offered the opportunity to keep in to keep in touch. What is not to love about that?

Probably loads which you will swiftly remind me of. Like the fact that my ability to do household tasks well while pootling on my iPhone is probably limited etc.

I happen to agree with you.

And wrote this blog entry about why Facebook is good not all that long ago.

yanbu. When it works well it's fun.

YANBU.

Thanks to FB, I have managed to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world, particularly some relatives in the US I've never really had a chance to know.

I think it would be better without most of the applications though. I am heartily sick of emails telling me that so-and-so has taken the such-and-such test and why don't I do it as well.

I love facebook, at the same time it does have a tendancy to make yu feel like everyione else in the world is having fun and looking great and wish I could actually catch up with some of the old friends on there.

katisha you can turn off email notifications, you know. Settings, My Account, Notifications. You can choose which emails to receive. Personally, I receive none.

I use it in a similarly staid way to you, but admit I have had to block new feeds from some of my more prolific and obscene young relatives...

However, this does remind me of the conversations our parents must have had fifteen years ago about how email would cause a breakdown in rational communication...

I have just been contacted by an old friend who I have not heard from in years. I also have contact with my cousins and family back in UK. It is a good way to stay in touch.

I can't stand these stupid applications. No, I don't want to send a shagging balloon around the world, or take part in a water fight. Why???

There are too many people however, who use FB as a way of communicating with family and friends instead of just speaking to them.

I agree the apps are a pain and I tend to ignore them. I am also careful only to add as a friend people I have actually met and know.

I have a big family so several of my siblings and a niece and nephew are also on fb which makes keeping up with them loads easier.

So we agree used wisely - fb is good! Yay

The thing I find is that my old friends and family work during the day and I don't ring then and in the evenings I am too knackered to talk so I don't talk on the phone to friends at the moment. I speak/ see relatives when I can but with 6 sibs and umpteen nieces and nephews scattered around it is hard.

Mrs Badger, are you young enough to be my daughter?

Me and a friend started an internet thingy 13 years ago..what trailblazers we were, but it was all a labour of love and didn't make any money...but very successful in its own way.

but re the OP, I just use it for friends and family, with the strictest controls on. Its lovely for me to be able to upload info and piccies of ds for his doting GPs the other side of the world (and as the are my exILs, means that not much personal communication has to take place).

I like it too - I have a number of friends who are, like me, useless at keeping up, but it's nice to see what they are up to and be able to make a quick comment or chat.

I also have a better insight into my nephews and nieces lives...

oh I wouldn't have thought so

I was just thinking about 'adults' and new technology - I know what I was saying about email 15yrs ago and I suspect it is similar to how the Yoof Of Today are reacting to FB

It's been great for me; I've moved around quite a lot and lost touch with lots of lovely friends over the years. Since joining fb I've been reunited with loads of people.

There are a few people who I grew apart from for very good reasons though and I've been careful to keep them off my friends list

Thanks for the tip Tee2072 - I have been in and hope I have disabled all the emails about how much my friends resemble slebs and what other quizzes they have done etc etc ad nauseam...

I love it too. I have friends & family who have moved out of the country, plus I've moved away from the main hub of the family. It is a great way to keep up to date with everyone.

Some of the applications are ok... I like to waste time doing quizes, but I never ask other people to do 'em cos I know how annoying it is to get dozens of requests everyday.

I just wish my Dad would join, so I don't have to send photos seperately.
