On a train and go to the loo - someone is in it

In this instance even with trying the door and eventually knocking, no movement at all. Clearly someone who wants to avoid the ticket inspector for the full 3 hour length of this journey

I obviously just went to another loo but it really pisses me off - when you’ve got carriages of people who have paid sixty quid for a ticket 👿

AIBU or does this really grind the gears for anyone else?!

Who made you the toilet monitor? Some people take longer than others in the loo and trying to embarrass or shame them is unhelpful and rude.

Yeah, someone like you did the same to me when I was in the baby change facility at our local (very baby-friendly cafe).

After the second try, I said loudly and firmly “there is someone in here”.

Person could have had Crone’s or some other issue. So rude.

Something similar happened to me - loo 'engaged' for 40 minutes between stations when I was hoping to use it because for the first time on a 3.5 hour journey, the seat next to me was vacant so I could get up without asking someone to move (window seat). By an enormous coincidence the loo became free once the train was in the next station - by which time someone had come and sat next to me again. Train was packed and all seats were reserved so I didn't want to relinquish my booked seat - I managed to wait. Really annoying, though.

That’s cruel - very. I remember having an incredibly heavy period on the train - I had leaked - had new underwear and tights to put on - I was with work people so I was desperately trying to rush.

By the time I got ready I don’t know if it was the movement of the train but I was so poorly and thought I might pass out so took me another 5-10 mins to steady myself

Yes very irritating if there was a fare dodger in there, but really rude of you to, as a general habit, keep rattling the handle in impatience every time you have to wait for the loo!

Thats awful. Its horrible when someone tries the door. I hope the person inside was ok. Why couldnt you just go and find another loo.

It's frustrating when a loo is unavailable, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions, It could be anything from the loo itself being faulty to the user being taken ill.

Why on earth would you want to embarrass someone using the toilet? You don’t know that they are ticket avoiders. Could be any number of reasons they’re in there.
There’s only one train CF here...

why would you try the door every 3-5 mins. If it’s occupied, it’s occupied.

I need longer than that, currently undergoing chemo which messes with my bladder and means it takes an age to empty I’d be really pissed off if your rattled the handle at me, and I’d tell you so.

In addition I have a teenager with asd who soils so again we would take longer.

You need to be more considerate.

I have inflammatory bowel disease and I think I can stay in a toilet for as long as I need - nothing anyone did would embarrass me out of it other than maybe train on fire?. Sometime it’s quick, sometimes it’s not, count yourself lucky that you could manage the next toilet without anything more than a bit of annoyance.

(And yes, I know I don’t if they were chronically ill but we don’t know if they are fate dodgers either, or do we?)

I was going somewhere a few years ago, and a similar situation to what you described.
The partner of the person on this side of the door reminded the woman there were other toilets on the train if that one was busy.

And btw even though the door says engaged, it can be because the staff have locked it as it's out of order.

The train I catch regularly says it’s occupied when it’s out of order for whatever reason.

I have Crohns, and I've been on both sides of that loo door! Nevertheless, I do think that the person who was there first has priority, especially as, if one does have a health condition, it's usually even harder and potentially messier to have to suddenly interrupt one's use of the toilet than to have to wait for it.
