AIBU?

AIBU to not understand falling asleep by accident?

I know IABU but I can't seem to start a thread in chat. Anyway I have never in my life just "fallen asleep" e.g. on the couch, reading in bed etc. I have to decide to go to sleep and it takes a while. It's always a decision, it never just happens. I seem to be alone though based on all the people falling asleep all over the place! Anyone else like this or am I just wierd?

I am the complete opposite. I feel my eyes get heavy, or I am watching something and suddenly I jump having realised I've dropped off.

More people seem to be like you whatsername! I'd swap in a flash.

Before DC I would have been with you all the way. Now, after 7 years of broken sleep, I’m permanently low level tired...I don’t sleep well at night if I nap but sometimes I just think ‘I’ll sit down for three minutes’ and promptly fall asleep.

I take it you’ve never been that tired? I’ve often just passed out somewhere after being awake 36+ hours.

I'm with you. I have never fallen asleep by accident. Always a conscious decision.
Nodding off in a chair or on a journey would never happen.
I wonder why some people are different?

If I've not slept well for a few nights I can easily find myself falling asleep on the sofa in an evening.

Delurking I had a terrible sleeper, didn't sleep through till he was about 6 😯, woke multiple times a night. Terrible sleep derivation. Still never just fell asleep.

It takes me seconds to fall asleep at night, I simply switch h the light off m, turn over and I'm gone. I rarely sleep anyway other than in bed but on s rare occasion I fall asleep in from of the tv it's always by accident.

I think people have widely varying levels of susceptibility to sleep. I’m borderline narcoleptic and fall asleep very easily.

Films have to be awesome to keep me awake.

I think it varies for people, doesn’t it? So sometimes I’ll nod off on the sofa (or even at work Blush ) because I’m tired/full/warm but then if I get a thought in my head when I’m lying in bed then it’s impossible to sleep, no matter how tired I am.

I have been very tired as I used to work a job with long hours, where I missed a full night's sleep each week (i.e. worked Sunday, Sunday night and Monday - slept at 10pm on Monday). I still didn't nod off.

I very rarely fall asleep uncontrollably, but I can choose to fall asleep at any time really. I could now be asleep on the sofa within 5 minutes if I wanted to. I'm not a very tired person, but I find it easy to fall asleep. In bed, I'm out almost as fast as the bedside lamp.

I’m the same OP.

Very rarely I have fallen asleep when I haven’t planned to, but it is only when a combination of definite choices have aLready been made - I have to have chosen to lay on the sofa, in comfy clothes, With a blanket on me, and the lights very dim/off, and I’ve had to have had a glass of wine or two. Then every so often I can sleep without planning it specifically.

But that and bed at night are the two only places I sleep.

I have a lot of trouble sleeping when I’m ‘supposed’ to. Going to bed at night to purposefully sleep means that I can’t, then when I’m watching tv or on a car journey etc I’ll drift off quite easily. The most common place at the moment is the cinema! 😳

I’m with you Op. To sleep is a battle for me. Always has been.

Even when dd was not sleeping and I’d had full nights of no sleep and I was so exhausted I felt like throwing up I’d still have to go to bed and work hard to get to sleep.

I can fall asleep easily!
I only really get about 4 hours at night, don’t know why. I usually fall asleep okay but never normally until around midnight. Get about 2 solid hours and then a couple more over the course of the night.
I often have a half an hour snooze when I get home from work (not always, but I’d say at least twice a week!).
I didn’t use to sleep this little or ever need or want an afternoon nap, only in the last 3/4 years or so. Strange!

I fall asleep pretty much anywhere as soon as I lie down. Usually on the sofa but have tested this skill on hard floors with much success!

If I go to a lecture/talk, I generally nod off very quickly. I gave up going to them at university.

No I'm exactly the same! But then I can never sleep (even if I wanted to) in cars, long plane journeys etc....can only sleep really well in my own bed tbh, and even then it takes me ages to fall asleep. Whereas the people I know who do just 'drop off' accidentally can sleep anywhere! So perhaps it just depends on whether you are a 'good sleeper' or not?
