AIBU?

Man Flu- lord help me I'm losing my patience!

My partner has a cold. It's been going on for 4 days now. I also have the same cold. He groans and moans constantly, coughs dramatically, sighs constantly, mopes around, complains how ill he feels, it's doing my head in.

He's acting as if he has the bubonic plague!

It's my day off today and I joked to him about having man flu and he went totally mental saying I don't have the same thing as him, I'm an asshole, I don't have to work today so feel sorry for him as he does (basically acting like he carries our entire household/earnings on his back which is in no way true!).

I've had the same thing, same symptoms but just get on with life? I've been out to get him throat sweets, lemons, honey etc even when I've felt like shit- plus he works from home and I've had to go out all day to work all this week in the cold 9-7 then working late at home so I should be the one getting some bloody sympathy!

I know it's a cold and I really don't want any sympathy really as I can deal with colds but AIBU to just wish he'd buck up and realise we both have the same thing but at least he gets to stay home in the warm all day?

God it's driving me mental. If you could hear how he coughs dramatically and belches and moans and groans you'd know what I mean! I just get on with being ill quietly and eating healthy foods, plenty of water etc.

Man flu truly is a thing. I text my mum last night and mentioned it to her and she said my dads the same- men would never get through child birthGrin

Working as a student nurse I've come to realise different individuals regardless of them male or female have different pain/sensetivity levels. I was so shocked when a grown man was crying whilst I removed a dressing for a small skin tear and a lady who nearly fainted when removing 1 stitch. Then I saw a teenager with a cut on his leg from the knee all the way to the ankle and whilst treating him he was laughing.

This made me realise you just have to let the 'sensetive' one's have their moan

Is he limping and saying "oh god" every five minutes?

Have the Manky Dressing Gown of Doom and Questionable Jogging Bottoms With The Saggy Knees/Arse made an appearance yet? It's not proper man-flu until one or both shows up.

@Bearfrills 🤣🤣 he doesn't wear pjs or have a dressing gown but he has been huddled up in a hoodie and a blanket on the sofa most of the time.

@Sicario it's more like sighing constantly + groaning and moaning like an extra in the walking dead every 2 secondsGrinAngry

@Littleraindrop15 Grin he is a sensitive one it would seem! It's funny as he's never been ill since I met him a year and a half ago so this has really opened my eyes. It's kind of off putting actually!

I had an actual heart attack a couple of years ago and made less fuss than when my OH had a cold over Xmas. To be fair he did buck his ideas up when I pointed this out.

A colleague and her DH both had a similar bad cold. Her DH told her, in all seriousness, that because he had started with the illness before she did, that he had weakened the virus before passing it on to her. Therefore, she couldn’t possibly have had it as bad as him.

No amount of science or facts would convince him otherwise.

Mind you, this was also the person that couldn’t follow a simple set of cooking instructions - he stopped at “add x amount of boiling water” as the recipe didn’t tell him how to boil the water. He was genuinely mind blown when pointed at the kettle.

@GertrudeCB oh man, I'm so sorry that happened to you, hope you're okay now. That actually reminds me- I had a kidney infection last year that resulted in being taken to A&E after OOH doctor and having an IV antibiotic. My partner just said I was being dramatic. His jaw dropped when I threw up all over the doctors office and had to be admitted for treatment.

My DH used to be like that, though he has improved tbf. Back in the day, he used to do all those things. On one occasion, I asked him if he could watch our DDs for 10 MINUTES so I could do a spot of grocery shopping, but he said he didn't feel up to it. (What are TVs for, I thought?). I took one of them with me in the end.

It got to me, as I had preschoolers at home during the day, and had to mind them at times when I felt as bad as he did that day.

Are you also being treated to a blow-by-blow account of the evolution of each symptom? And the repeated assurance that he "really doesn't need this right now" like anyone ever does

Report
weekendsleep · 22/03/2019 15:20

@WhoTFIsAlanBrazil YES, constant 'I have to work I don't need this right now' 'I'm under pressure' 'you can sleep all day' etc. For the record, I haven't slept all day, I've cared for the pup, cleaned, tidied, washing etc.

Also didn't sleep much last night as he was groaning and coughing loudly then.

@WhoTFIsAlanBrazil 😂😂 please take all my rage, I'm going to explode!

He's just gone out now to the shop to get more medicines, I'm surprised he hasn't turned into a halls cough sweet!

He complained last night he had a runny stomach, I explained it was because he'd eaten a whole packet of cough sweets which act as laxatives if you take too many.
He shut up after that.Smile

@Mammajay I'm sorry you're feeling rough, I'm sure he doesn't have flu though. No fever, sweats, stomach issues, pale looking etc.

Just a plain old sniffly nose and cough. Not even a head ache!

We've just had a bout here that went on for bloody weeks. It was so bad and so much worse than anyone else has ever felt when they had a cold virus that we decided he actually had manthrax.

At least he's taking medication. DH doesn't take any and complains about how bad he feels. He no longer gets sympathy.
