AIBU?

AIBU to think that this is just wrong?

A girl I know, lets call her K, recently had a baby. K has just turned 18, and she was living with her sister and nephew. K and baby clearly had their own room judging by the 500+ photos she shares on shapchat daily.

K just shared a photo of her new house keys. Apparently for her and baby, government funded of course as K has never worked a day in her life.

Ireland are having a massive homeless crisis, hostels and hotels are full to the brim with families, and K a few weeks after her 18th birthday gets given a house??

I work 50 hours a week, and had to move county to afford to rent a house. Yet this one pops out a kid at 17 and gets handed a house, that I and all the outer tax payers of Ireland are paying for, as her 18th birthday present from the State!

There are families out there in much worse living conditions than K, who have been on housing lists for years, why should she get a house ahead of them??

Is it just me who thinks that this is wrong?

Sorry I needed a bit of a rant!

Yanbu
It's so frustrating
My dh and I bust our balls to work, and balance childcare.
Our house is so shabby at the moment we would need easily £15k to make it nice. Full re-decoration, new bathroom and kitchen are needed and outside could do with a makeover.
My cousin has just been given a 4bed semi which isn't brand new, but she's had all basic decorations done along with new bathroom and kitchen. Her rent is £80 per week.
And it's close to our town centre.
And yip, you've guessed it, she's never worked a day.
It makes you wonder who the mug is in all this

More fool her I say, would surely have been easier/more fun to stay with her sister and another child. Unless, in fact, the situation was much worse than it appeared.

Yes its frustrating but she must be in an area of the country where there is enough social housing. this doesn't happen everywhere.

YANBU at all, OP. I wonder if this situation happens in other countries, not just the UK & Ireland.

Is it wrong? No
Would you rather stay K stay in a more than likely overcrowded place with her sister than have her own home with her child?
I wonder where her parents are tbh?

If it's so great being a young single mother on benifits why don't you give it a go?

I popped a kid out at 18 , I'm in my 40s now... never been given social housing.

I have always rented due to housing shortages.

Actually there’s 3. Honestly, begrudging someone a home What the hell is wrong with some people?! And having a baby by the age of 18 isn’t as much fun as you’d think Hmm

I’d rather be busting my guts but having a supportive partner and stable income than be a single mother at 18 years old to be honest.

YANBU the country (both England and Ireland) is fucked because of this. What is honestly the point in working these days?! It's a joke. Free childcare if both parents work full time from age 1 should be the rule at the minimum. Tax credits for those that work full time not those that get part time wage, maintenance, Free hours at nursery, AND tax credits. I see that set up a lot and they earn a fuck load more than me! It's so wrong. Any who rant over.

It's not a race to the bottom. You don't know her circumstances and why she was allocated housing ahead of another family, but there will be a valid reason.

What are you doing to change the housing situation in Ireland? Have you spoken to your MP about your concerns, what solutions are they proposing?

It doesn't seem fair at all from the outside but as it's based on points she must have been high up on the list.

ATBhinchers - What a nasty post. Are you always this awful?

Report
Greensleeves · 07/02/2019 19:26

No, I don't think I did.

And the poster that said "the country is fucked because of this"...your ignorance is embarrassing. This woman's living expenses are peanuts. Do you really not know where the money is actually going?

Report
ATBhinchers · 07/02/2019 19:27

It's not nasty it's factual. People that work full time should be rewarded not shit on with £1000 per month childcare and no real help from the government.

^Yep. The feckless and irresponsible people get rewarded.

Oh goody, another goady benefits bashing thread by either a new poster (or one too cowardly to use their real username).

Life on benefits is not one to aspire to, it's not easy, no one is living some grand chosen life of luxury. If she hadn't found a home, she may well be one of the homeless you're ironically lamenting. You don't know how she came by her circurmstances, don't judge someone's life through facebook. You think she's so lucky, pehaps give up everything you've worked hard for to live a similar life.

Sadly, there are lots that think this way. Hasn't changed since I was that 18 year old.

I’ll bet it’s because she stomped her feet and demanded one To show just how entitled she was. Right? Hmm Or maybe it’s because she was next on the list and everyone after her wasn’t in as much need as her. Maybe you should speak to the housing office and demand to know why your tax money is paying for this social injustice.
