To do my own makeup?

Hi everyone,

I am getting married abroad next year, and the hotel we are having the ceremony in obviously offers makeup and hair services. But it is so expensive! I’m talking £150ish for hair and the same for makeup, and I’ve got my two bridesmaids to think about as well.

So I’m thinking about doing my own make up - I’ve got a few months to practice. Would I bitterly regret this? Has anyone else done there own?

I did my own. I don’t wear much. I think a lot of people you see who have it done professionally don’t look like themselves on the day, which I think is a bit weird. I did my own hair too. Do not regret it.

Did everyone buy special ‘posh’ makeup or just their regular routine?

It’s fine. If you want you could invest in new make up and get tips from a make up counter from a department store.

I’d definitely do my own, and I’d use my regular (not cheap) makeup.

I wouldn't but I'm hopeless at doing my own make-up. If your confident in doing it then go for it! A lot of beauticians also do male up lessons so it might be worth having a look at those, I'm sure I've seen lots for about £50 so that's still a big saving!

I worry I’d regret it because obviously I want to look nice and I’m not one of those women whose makeup always look immaculate - I don’t wear much as I’m not very skillfull

I did my own and was happy with it as I just wanted a polished, natural look and knew if I'd had a makeup artist who had their on ideas, I wouldn't be able to say no! (I'm far more assertive now, but back then, no way).
I took my sister with me to Selfridges to go around the makeup counters getting bits to suit my skin tone and practised in the weeks leading up to it.
There are so many videos online now, you'll learn in no time! Make sure you use natural light and take some selfies to check your work, I'm sure you'll look lovely

I had a make up tutorial in body shop of all places and then bought the products they used. I did have a couple of make up trials but they all make me look orange so I decided to do my own. No regrets.

I went to the MAC counter and paid for a "bridal lesson", I can't remember exactly but think it was about £50 and I then got the keep £50 worth of products after.

But it was really useful. Plus watch lots of YouTube videos.

I’d go to a Makeup counter (pick the one with the ladies you’d like to look like). Explain what you are after and ask them to show you how to do it.

No, I didn’t really get anything different. The makeup I have normally is Boots No7, with a few ‘posher’ bits thrown in, eg I think I was mainly using Chanel eyeshadow at the time. I just did natural makeup - probably a more ‘evening’ than daytime version, not that there’s much difference for me.

It took me less than five minutes to do!!

I'd do my own, although I'd probably splash out on a very decent foundation and concealer compared to what I normally buy.

I did have a trial thing at a makeup counter - it looked shit, which confirmed that my initial thought to do my own was right!

I did my own and didn't regret it.

I did my usual routine, but bought some higher end products to use. I'd definitely recommend getting a good quality foundation, concealer and powder if you use it. As long as you have a decent base, that's the most important thing.

I did my own and spent some of the money I'd saved by not having it done treating myself to an upgrade of all my usual stuff. I just spent a bit of time at makeup counters trying stuff out and seeing what I liked. I'd treat myself to a good base/primer too so it says on well too. Back when I got married I had Clarins beauty flash balm which was a real treat - I eeked it out for ages after! There's loads more choice these days though.

Should add I didn't regret doing it myself and loved having all my new stuff to use on honeymoon.
