DS can crawl - what sweet hell is this?!

DS can crawl now. I actually encouraged it.

As I type this I can only have 1 eye on Mumsnet as the other is on the feral crawling child.

Walking was good. It is the climbing, being able to reach into drawers and open the fridge and get eggs to ‘make cakes’ with that is the killer.

On a positive note I found DD was much happier with each new development as she was less frustrated.

Ah yes I remember the shock when I could no longer put my first baby down and know he would still be on the same place when I returned.
Don’t worry though you’ll soon grow eyes in the back of your head.

Also they may learn to talk and never stop. Pretty sure one of mine hasn't been silent for more than two minutes in 12 years. He even talks in his sleep.

I remember the climbing stage. We moved house. There was a floor to ceiling built in bookcase. Owner clearly wanted money for it....we just wanted it removed before we even moved in (ds would have scaled it in seconds).

If you think this is fun wait a few months! When they're scaling the furniture, plugging their fingers into any electrical socket they can find and trying to open the bleach for a nice drink you'll sigh wistfully at the crawling days 😂

Seriously though, this is the start of a really fun stage - congratulations on your little creeper!

My DS learnt to crawl over the Christmas holiday whilst my DH was around. I remember being so smug- 'look he's crawling and we've got this covered'. Then DH went back to work.

Oh my god. It was chaos.

It gets much worse when they learn to walk, at least with crawling they need to use their hands to help them move - once they are walking (or bum shuffling) and they realise that they can carry stuff and move, that's when the fun starts - loo rolls down the toilet, emptying cupboards into the kitchen bin to name but a few!

Well I remember a camping trip many years ago. The family in the tent next to us had a crawling baby. The baby did have reins on, attached to a retractable dog lead. Meant mum and dad could sit outside the tent without jumping up every 5 seconds. I remember not been sure to be horrified they had done this or to be thinking it was a stroke of genius. This was over 20 years ago so I suppose no body batted an eyelid back then

It's a massive shock when they're suddenly mobile and dangerous. I put the travel cot downstairs as a makeshift baby cage sonic could have a wee without the worry of immediate peril.

Stairgates on every doorframe regardless of if they lead to stairs. It's the way to keep then contained. Until they learn to climb over the stairgate.

The learning to walk phase is worst. Pulling themselves up then faceplanting. Everything is a hazard, not least the floor. With my first, I hovered (and overused the bouncer for containment). With the second I figured falling is how they learn. And put down alot of fluffy soft rugs.

DS2 unscrewed his cot at 5am at 11months old!
There was an almighty crash and I went through panicing to find him in the midst of a collapsed cot looking bemused.

Ds walked at 9 months, he was 2 weeks early so technically you could say just over 8 months.

All the books said no babies don’t walk until 10 months.

By 10 months he was jumping off the windowsills and climbing the curtains.

I think the golden age is somewhere between 3-6 months when they sleep through the night but don’t move on their own.

Mine unscrewed the panel in front of the cash desk in M&S once.

Both of mine were awful during the crawling phase. My eldest did a good line of pulling himself up on something and then finding a way to topple inside things. It was funny and terrifying all at the same time.
Ironically he was actually less of a problem once he was walking. He liked holding my hand.
As for ds2 though, crawling was hell, walking was a mass of bruises and hell.
Then he started talking.
Sigh.

Now they're both at school and I finally have some relief.
