Posting here for traffic.

I'm graduating from a prestigious uni (my masters degree) at the end of this month, and I am wondering if I should get a class ring. It costs £200, and it's celestrium (stainless steel).

It'll probably be my last graduation ever, and I have graduated previously from other universities. I've never bought a class/graduation ring previously. But I can say that this graduation is the closest to my heart. I've n

I am not a jewellery person, so it will basically be a memento, probably not something I will wear often.

Do it? Don't do it?

Is it something that most of the class will buy?

I can see wanting a memento, but I would have thought it would be better to get one that you would find more use or pleasure from.

Can you easily afford it? If not, why not

GinaCarbonara Fri 13-Jul-18 02:40:11

Whoops.

If so, why not

Serendipite Fri 13-Jul-18 02:45:47

Yeah, I can afford it. But it's more of I'm thinking of buying it in case I regret not getting one someday. And since this is going to be my last graduation most probably. But not because I really want it.

Then no don’t buy it! Spend £200 on something you really want and will enjoy, and then you can remember graduating whenever you use it!

If you don't really want it then why are you thinking of doing it? confused

If you won't wear it, it's just a useless trinket. Take that money and buy yourself something special that you'll actually enjoy. Congratulations!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser Fri 13-Jul-18 03:41:56

Why not use the £200 to buy yourself another piece of jewellery to mark your graduation, one that you like and would wear. Maybe with a stone in the university’s colour?

Candyflip Fri 13-Jul-18 03:44:38

Is this in the U.K.? I have never heard of this there.

I'm confused too - who said I don't want it?

Serendipite Fri 13-Jul-18 03:48:26

My reason for wanting to buy is more of I'm worried I might not regret getting one, as opposed to me wanting to wear it all the time.

And no, not in the UK.

Candyflip Fri 13-Jul-18 03:49:24

Is it the US? Which university?

Serendipite Fri 13-Jul-18 03:57:51

Is it the US? Which university?

No. Australia.

Candyflip Fri 13-Jul-18 04:03:44

They are mass produced shit in the US, and I would imagine if it is made from stainless steel the quality there is also quite shit. They are always pretty ugly as well. I think the idea from a pp to buy special jewellery to commemorate it yourself is a better idea. Something you would wear all the time to remind yourself how well you did.

I don’t know anyone in Australia that has a class ring and I know several masters and a PhDs

ICJump Fri 13-Jul-18 04:10:16

But if it would make you happy do it. Masters is a huge achievement and you should celebrate yourself

It's my first time to graduate in an Australian university. I have no idea whether it's common here or not, but it's an option in the graduation package.

TheQueef Fri 13-Jul-18 04:18:57

If you can spare the money buy it.
You will regret not buying it but if you buy it and Chuck it in a draw it's only money wasted.

Go for it, you earned it.
Congratulations flowers

Yep, never heard of class rings in Australia and I'm educated to Ph.D level.

I'm intrigued. I thought they were American.

Basically, though, if you don't want it, don't buy it.

HollyBollyBooBoo Fri 13-Jul-18 05:13:16

Sounds like mass produced tat. Fairly sure you're life won't be enhanced by having it.

Bitlost Fri 13-Jul-18 05:19:42

No. Simply no. Take aclass photo on your phone.

longwayoff Fri 13-Jul-18 05:28:31

How many degrees do u need to recognise atotal rip off when u see it? No. Ridiculous. spend your money on something more worthwhile.

cariadlet Fri 13-Jul-18 05:33:32

I've never heard of class rings, but it just sounds like a money making scheme. Surely the best mementos will be your degree certificate and photographs of you with friends from the course.

Grasslands Fri 13-Jul-18 05:38:21

my hubby is an engineer and wears his engineering ring faithfully and i have mine from my nursing school that i've worn every day since i graduated from my program.
get it and wear it with pride.
