A friend has just posted a picture of her tattoo on FB, am I correct in thinking their shouldn’t be any apostrophes?
The wording is-

Daddy’s Girl
Mama’s Angel

There should be apostrophes. It's correct. Naff as fuck, but correct.

The apostrophes are for possession. It’s correct.

If the Girl belongs to Daddy and the Angel belongs to Mama then the apostrophes are correct - they are used to show possession.

Yes apostrophes are correct--the angel belongs to mama and the girl to daddy

But your 'their' should be a 'there'.

Sniggering at someone who doesn't understand basic grammar trying to catch someone else out.

The apostrophes are correct but if your going try and correct grammar at least make sure you use the right there.

An apostrophe denotes ownership so they are correct.

OP isn't confident about SPAG and is worried that her friend has made a permanent mistake, so asks those who are confident, and accepts their answer with grace.

Why are we sneering?

Report
snowagain · 21/05/2018 19:55

Defo correct. Smile

This always massively confuses me - I thought an apostrophe was in place of a missing letter so ‘aren’t’ which is a shortened version of ‘are not’ - the apostrophe replaces the o. I thought if it was possession then it it was supposed to be after the word ie ‘Kates’ bag’?

I understand I am incorrect from what you are all saying here but can someone explain to me please why it isn’t ‘Kates’ bag’ and is ‘Kate’s bag’ - isn’t that saying ‘Kate is bag’? Confused

Because it's MN MrsHathaway and sneering at those less knowing is frequently done.

I'm very much enjoying the mistakes made by the posters commenting though (on something that the OP didn't ask for advice on), it's quite amusing.

Apostrophe after the S indicates belonging to a plural, or a name ending in S traditionally.
