To hate the word “mom

I actively cringe when I read this word.... although not if I hear it - must be used by an American/American sounding person otherwise it just sounds fricking weird!!

There was a thread about this just a few days ago. Some parts of the UK (mainly West Midlands but some others) use Mom, it’s just the way they speak and there is nothing wrong with it, I don’t get the hate? I live in Birmingham, and my DH and children say ‘Mom’ and even though I’m originally from somewhere that uses ‘Mum’ I’ve never found it weird or cringey. 🤷‍♀️

I use it, my mom grew up in the Midlands. My granny always signed herself as Mom and she was Scottish.

I know someone who says "mother", which personally I hate but it's none of my business what she calls her parent.

I filled out my sons form for updating details for cubs the other day and was surprised in the contact details it said "Mom" for which part I had to fill out.

But even given that you didn’t know about the British usage of the word why would it bother so much?

Do you cringe when you hear maman, madre, mamma or mammy?

Yes yes, everyone hates Birmingham accents and colloquialisms. We get it. TBH it's not the accent I'd have chosen but I scrape by day to day

I'm brummie and love our accent and local words to be honest, to me 'mum' sounds incredibly posh and I'd never use it, but plenty of people do shrug

An ex used to do this. I asked him if it was his phone autocorrecting it and he said that's just how he spells it. He's from Sheffield! It's definitely 'mum' or even 'mam' round there.

I've moved to Birmingham and didn't know they said mom until I lived here. It doesn't really bother me although I'd rather dd said Mum just because it sounds 'right' to me (from east mids). But it doesn't sound weird or anything.

I am from a Mum area but have moved to a Mammy/ Mummy area (even adult children) but I think it’s so weird and had to stick to Mummy in primary school only and then Mum! I couldn’t be a Mom either but I’ve no strong feelings about others being Mom!
