Believing in ghosts

Taken off the back of the ‘conspiracy theory’ thread made me think about people believing in ghosts.
I personally believe as I’ve seen it, as has my mum, Nan and DP.
We have a ghost whom we call Mary. No particular reason we just use that when talking about her so the kids don’t get scared if we say ghost.
It all started 9 years ago when we first moved here. As it was a very harsh winter we had all windows closed (usually sleep with them open) at around 1am we heard a massive bang. Turned on the side light to see 3 deodorants all fallen on the floor. This went on for 8 nights in a row, it became normal and didn’t surprise us. A few months later I saw a white ghostly figure of a women standing over my sons cot. As I live for this kind of stuff I was not bothered. Since then we’ve witness more and more things. When you tell others some believ and some don’t. One of my friends used to take the piss out of me until one day he stayed at a relatives house in the countryside and witness a strange ghost like figure. It’s true what they say, seeing is believing. On my bucket list is to visit some of the most haunted places in America.
I tried to find out if anything had happened before we move here but from what I can make out it’s a saintly town which has only ever had one murder in over 100 years and a was severely affected by the great storm of 1987.
Who else believes?

I believe but we're in the minority on MN and you will be told you're delusional.

Me, I’ve seen one. Absolutely no doubt about it.

I think some people want to believe so much they actually somehow convince themselves that rational things are actually paranormal.

Don't get me wrong, I like reading about them, I enjoy the stories and rare pictures (funny how there's not more photographic evidence) and keep an open mind.

But I do believe it's mostly explained easily.

Your mind will always try to make people out of shadows etc. You might be stressed / ill. Might be something toxic, might be a magnetic pull. No such thing as ghosts

You should read Paranormality by Richard/Robert Wiseman it's excellent at explaining why people see ghosts.

A work colleague made up a story about the girl who haunted the upstairs corridors, it's amazing how many people have also seen her....Grin

I’m 100% sure nobody has ever seen a ghost. I’m equally sure that people are convinced they have seen them.

The mind can conjure all sorts of things. True or otherwise.

I believe that some people believe they have seen ghosts. I don't believe that they have actually seen them. Sorry.

I believe that the experience of seeing a ghost is real. I have seen several myself. I remain to be convinced that what I saw/other people see is the spirit of a dead person.

There are huge pots of money out there for anyone who can record any verifiable evidence of this sort of thing and noone has which says it all really.

My brother has the same views as Some of you guys. Makes for a healthy debate and a lot of piss taking 😊 my dad even believes. He used to work on the underground which is obviously popular for people to commit suicide. He’s seen many ghosts.
Maybe it is easily explained. I think it’s more fun to believe it’s a ghost. And also without people thinking they’ve seen ghosts then these researchers wouldn’t have anything to research 😊

I have seen and heard our family ghost. Even my dc who I had never shared my experiences with have told me theirs. Even my teens who would never risk looking so foolish!!

All my ILs believe in ghosts and the like. They go to clairvoyants, base life decisions on what these people say, post pictures of their rooms with orbs and shadows that look like faces on various sites, watch the haunted type TV programmes (which I thought were hoaxes/entertainment but must admit never watched) and always buy magazines and newspapers if they have a "lucky" charm in them (they once bought a paper with a "lucky foot", David Beckham's I think, picture in it and stroked it for luck every day until it fell apart. The children unsurprisingly all believe this as well.

I think they ate batshit personally.

I have seen them on and off since the age of 2, I am of the mind that not everyone has the same beliefs as me but while I would never criticise someone for their beliefs I would expect the same respect back in regards to mine

i want to belive!

there is just so much evidence out there but nothing definite. i also have read alot of books about haunting and believe something is left as a 'recording' have yet to have an experience myself but the universe is so large and we don't understand much of it so i would hope there is something....

Which is exactly why you see "this kind of stuff".

I say I have an open mind, and I’m easily spooked by others’ stories, but I think it would take a great deal to get me to actually believe that I, personally, had experienced a haunting. For example, I suspect many more ‘woo’ people would believe my current house haunted. Yet I steadfastly remain convinced it’s not - because it’s such a huge jump from what I know. I’ve hesitated posting my story on here for fear people would convince me otherwise :)

I really don't believe in them.

I saw something the other day that I can't explain.

Ali You "expect" respect for believing childish, unscientific, unverified, unevidenced nonsense?

Believe whatever you like, but respect is earned not demanded.

My Grandmother lived in a haunted house. It was a Nurse. My GM died in 1992. She ran her large Georgian house as a boarding house, but couldn't get hardened Seamen to stay on the top floor.

About 10 years ago I was in a pub and got chatting to another group. There were pensioners in the group. The conversation started about horror films, my then Partner was a wuss. The old man in the other group told the story of him seeing a ghost when he was younger living in lodgings. He was on his way in late one night and it passed him and disappeared into a house. He then described my GM's Ghost. He didn't believe me at first, until I described how my GM's house was painted (it was distinctive) and demolished before I was born.

There's actually been sightings of her, since because the place is now a University.
