Bloody antidepressants (citalopram) after a 10 year stint !

Started taking them soon after my youngest son was born - he's amazing and in his final year of primary school now.

I've tried a few times over the last cpl years to come off of citalopram- but the withdrawals had been horrendous- I don't know whether it's been a mind over matter thing but this time I've actually done it ! (And i feel so proud of myself )

10 days without them and I feel like a mist has been cleared.

Feeling better for sure !

(Thx for reading what is likely the most boring thread on here 😆)

Well done OP. I was put on them once and they made me feel so horrendous that I went cold turkey over a weekend to wean myself off them. I know that it was a stupid thing to do, but I was desperate. Have never touched ADs since.

Brilliant! How long did it take you? X

Wishiwasholsk · 28/01/2018 16:07

They really helped me but I wasn't on them for long.

I think ADs are fantastic short term to help you but they don't help in getting to the real problem.

So well done because unless you've experienced what you have then you have no idea how difficult it is to go cold turkey.

My GP suggested going down to one tab evey other day for a month - then go one every 2 days for a cpl of weeks - and she said you will literally just forget to take them as you won't feel the need for them.... she was right. Wish I'd seen her a cpl of years ago for advice!

Well done OP, I'm currently weaning myself onto my tabs & slowly increasing but once I feel in a good place then il be coming off.

It's not easy!

Well done op. I found that initially I was ok and then after a few weeks I went crazy. I persevered though and was fine after about five days!

So if this happens to you try persevering for a couple of days first

Certainly isn't easy - and being in a good place mentally and feeling strong enough to get through the withdrawals is a big thing. I made a point of. It driving for a week as my head felt 'strange' kinda floaty and spacey with high alertness - very odd feeling, but I'm happy to say I'm feeling more 'me' now xx

Well done you. I have been on tablets on and off for years and am now looking towards going tablet free. It is so daunting but it is great to read about your success. Well done you.x

There's always one.... And it's going to be me 😉

Whilst I'm so pleased you are feeling good about your decision to come off this medication, please think about being more sensitive to those who cant/won't.

There is no shame in needing medication. There is no rush to 'get off' medication.

For some people, antidepressants are a lifetime commitment, And I tell you it feels fucking shit that there's still society's opinion that we've just not done as well as the ones who take them for a limited time.

Ooh OP that is great!
Please could you let me know how you started the process of coming off? I'm on 40mg a day atm and would like to very very slowly start coming off them.

Indeed omg ! No shame whatsoever in needing them ! That's why I've been on them so long but it came a time I knew I was strong enough to come off them - that's all x
I fully support anyone that's on them and needs them and believe me I did !

I’ve recently stopped taking them. It’s amazing :-). Have replaced it with lots of running and the endorphins seem to be helping as well
