What would you do?

Quick question...

90y/o Uncle has passed away. His only living relatives are you, your Dad, and your sister. Everyone gets on well, no family rifts at all.

Uncle leaves 50% to your Dad, and 50% to you (male) in his will.
Nothing to sister at all.

Would you split with your sister? Dad has already said he will give her 33% of his inheritance...

Yes I would.

A few years ago my Dad discussed leaving everything to me. I said that if he does that I will give half to my sibling.

Absolutely split 50/50 with my sister. Is this a reverse?

Welli would share unless there’s something you are not sharing.

33% each definitely sounds like the fairest way. Unless your Uncle didn't see sister too often or something like that (am I correct in assuming that you are the sister?) If sister was left out of the will purely because she's female hen uncle is a bit of a cf in my opinion.

Unless there’s more to it then I would give half of yours to your sister without question.

Sorry just realised you are probably the sister...so yes IIWU I would expect half from DB, Dad can keep his 50%

Yes, I would. This is not really a hypothetical to me; I passed on 100% of my inheritance from my grandfather to my sister (I'm quite well off, she's struggling financially).

Having said that, if you're the sister, OP, it'd not be right to expect anything. If the inheriting sibling agrees I think it's lovely - if not, they're completely within their rights not to!

I would split with my sister yes.

EggsonHeads · 22/01/2018 18:05

Well it depends on the sister and your own need but under normal circumstances yes.

Report
Agyne · 22/01/2018 18:05

Yes, tell them to share it with you

Report
Bluelady · 22/01/2018 18:07

Split it all three ways, Dad's already set the example.

DarkStuff · 22/01/2018 18:08

All things being equal I would share.
If I was skint and sister was well off, maybe not.

ScreamingValenta · 22/01/2018 18:10

Yes, I would give her 33% - unless she was so well off as not to need it.

This was the uncle's money to leave as he saw fit - there is no obligation to be fair.

This is now the nephews money - he can do what he wants with it. He also has no obligation to be fair - but it would be the nice thing to do.

One day the sister might win the lottery and remember her brothers decision. One day the dad will die and may remember the brothers decision.

No-one has to do anything but all decisions have consequences. Having a loving caring family is worth far more than money.

I would share for sure. Though it would be 17% of each half share if both gave.

If my brother didn't share I'd be seriously considering my relationship with him tbh.

LML83 · 22/01/2018 18:12

I would split with my sibling. 33% sound good, if dad didn't want to I would give half of my share. I would assume it's an oversight.

I would share too.

Don't think much of your maths, malfoyy!

We'd pool the money and split it 3 ways.

Report
Cleanermaidcook · 22/01/2018 18:28

It would depend on the situation.
If sister and brother had equal relationship with uncle, both cared for / visited him similar amounts then yes I would.
Is sister had little or no imput in uncles life or had shown little affection or care for him then no I wouldn't.

I would share too. Our dad left everything to me and I shared it four ways. We are all close, but I would have done the same if we weren’t.
I know that’s how my dad would have wanted it

Depends how much money it is! If it was under £10k I would probably split it to avoid a family rift. But if it was a huge lump sum then I'm not going to give away that amount of cash.

Unless there is a backstory as to why the sister didn't inherit (and by that I mean a reasonable backstory) then absolutely the only fair thing to do would be to split the money. And it doesn't matter the amount.

ohfourfoxache · 22/01/2018 19:19

Providing there wasn’t a bloody good reason not to, I’d split everything with my sister.

Enidblyton1 · 22/01/2018 19:38

We had a very similar situation. The sibling who had inherited gave half her share to the other sibling. There was no obligation to share, but I know that it would have caused huge resentment if the sibling had not rectified the 'mistake'.

Why do you think the granddaughter was missed off the will? Was the grandfather old fashioned enough to think that boys should inherit, while girls would marry into wealth??!
