To ask if this means working during school holidays

Sorry, posting for traffic really. I've seen a job that looks really interesting as part of leadership team (pastoral role) in a primary school. I haven't worked in a school before but have role specific experience and qualifications that mean I could evidence all essential criteria were I to apply.

Description has salary and states "52 weeks a year" which is fine, but then I wondered if this actually means the salary is the salary rather than pro rated for the academic year, and if the actual working hours would be term time plus a bit like many school roles? Or would the leadership team generally work across the school holidays?

I would think it is termtime working but you get paid equally over 12 months

I would assume that meant working 52 weeks per year. Think you should ring them to find out!

Normally the leadership team work part of the holidays and if it's a pastoral role involving safeguarding responsibilities you may well be expected to be on call should an issue arise. But I expect you'd get more holidays than in a non school based job but less than the pupils iyswim

I would say that meant all year round working, though, rather than term time only which is 39 weeks.

They've specifically stated 52 weeks so that you know it's not term-time only.

It should be clear whether they’re talking about the ‘salary’’ or the ‘hours’ from the context?! Without actually seeing it, it’s hard to know. Butbfrim what you’ve said, I’d say it’s paid over 52 weeks as they stated the salary then the weeks.

There’s no harm in calling to get further details.

Not even the Headteacher works 52 weeks per year. I'm a TA and I am paid for 38 weeks divided into 12 monthly instalments.

What would you be expected to do during the school hols and half terms etc. Surely the school closes. Maybe not though.

It isn't very clear at all what it means I think you need to ask. Usually if it's a term time only job but the salary is split into 12 monthly payments it says pro-rata.

Our Bursar works 40 weeks but a pastoral lead really revolves around the children.

We have a Social and Emotional Welfare officer in our school, she is employed by the council and gets 5 weeks holiday a year. So she is in over the summer months.

You are contracted to work the 52 weeks with a holiday allowance to be taken within that 52 weeks.

The 52 weeks part is to show you that you don't get 13 weeks holiday like teachers/TAs/kitchen staff.

The non-teaching staff at my DC's school work 52 weeks a year (minus whatever they choose to take as annual leave). The school also stays open all year round (minus bank holidays). If the job spec does not explicitly state it is term time only (or 38/9 weeks) you have to assume you will have to work school holidays.

cathy the school doesn't shut. Even over summer, deep cleaning goes on by cleaners, the school caretaker is in and the pastoral care are in sometimes with children and their parents to put in place coping strategies.

It means you work 52 weeks a year (minus standard holiday entitlement) - this is not a term-time only role.

You are vanishingly unlikely to get a senior leadership pastoral role in a school without having worked in a school.

I would suggest you phone up to check (or wait until interview success and then check). It might be that they want you to do prep/ admin work or training during the holidays? Or maybe to do outreach work or out-of-school care?

Can I ask a (possibly stupid) question?

If teachers work 39 weeks/year, are your accrued holidays, which should be about 85% of a 52 week role, paid on top and included in the pro-rata calcs for your monthly pay?

52 weeks a year means 52 weeks but with standard holiday entitlement. My job specifies 39 weeks (which is term time plus inset days) and I get paid in 12 equal monthly instalments. The office manager is 42 weeks per year. Premises manager and cleaners are 52 weeks a year with standard annual leave amount which can only be taken during school holidays.

Our school's business manager works 52 weeks a year ... takes her holidays during term time and asked for well in advance.

A lot of schools require a couple of weeks over the summer holidays, too, for certain roles, as well as covering all training days.

I'm not a teacher but as I understand it, you would be paid for the number of weeks you work (eg, 39). This is worked out as an annual salary and then paid in 12 monthly instalments. You don't accrue holiday in the same way as you might in a 'normal' job. you have your holidays dictated by the school so there is no over and on top of. Your salary reflects the number of days worked and therefore the amount of holiday is already accounted for and paid for. It's just that its divided up over 12 months.

You get paid your annual leave entitlement.

My annual salary is then pro-rated for the actual weeks, so I am not paid for the school holidays but am still paid during the school holidays.
