Crossroads. Lanes A and B are on minor roads, coming onto a 40mph limit road with two lanes both ways (see Lane 1 and Lane 2). The cross roads are traffic light controlled. Both minor roads get green lights at the same time. There are no filter arrows.

You are in Lane A. You want to turn right onto the main road. There are cars in Lane B also signalling to turn down this road (left turn for B).

The lights turn green. You:

  1. Pull out into the junction, wait until there are no cars approaching in Lane B, and make your turn. You can go into Lanes 1 or 2.

  2. Turn right at the same time as cars in Lane B are turning left. Assume all cars in Lane B will turn into Lane 1, therefore you can turn into Lane 2.

Further information: there is a petrol station about 200m up the road with Lanes 1 and 2, you need to be in Lane 2 to access this. However I think this shouldn't change what I think is the correct answer Grin.

2 - You cannot assume that the people will turn into lane 1, as what about the people driving straight on?

So the answer has to be 1

Well, I'd be doing 2, but I live in Belgium, where it's a bloody free for all. I don't think 2 is wrong, especially as you might get stranded with the lights against you in the middle if you wait for everything to go through from the opposite lane.

  1. Cars may not turn left - you have to wait for a gap before you can cross their lane safely.

1, because those turning left can turn into either lane 1 or lane 2.

You are crossing the carriageway so you surely have to give way until there are no other vehicles coming from B?

  1. You have to wait until all the drivers opposite have cleared before you can go.

1, because lane B has right of way to go straight over if they want. So you wait until lane B is clear/empty then turn into lane 1 or 2

I would use option 1.

Yep, 1 here too. Turning right has to wait until the junction is clear.

Definitely 1. You don't know which lane B will go into after turning.

1... however, I learnt to drive in another country which would have said 2 was fine. In UK, though, even when you turn right, driving instructor told me to get over to left ASAP, so cannot turn into the Lane1-2 area until there is no obstruction to getting to the left lane.

We've got a similar junction near here, it annoys me when drivers do 2.
