AIBU?

To question the purpose of a certain app?

Right, so me and DP are having a bit of a discussion about a certain social media app that will remain nameless (I’m sure you may be able to guess anyway). I know social media is a trouble maker and I’m not a big fan of it myself anyway and only use it to keep in touch with friends that live overseas.

Anyway, so this app - its main feature is that everything automatically deletes after a certain amount of time, so photos, messages, the lot. I can think of no logical reason why you would need an app that does this - other than one. Please tell me I am not the only person who thinks this? Or am I just being too suspicious?

Why would you want conversations to automatically delete? And why would you want photos and videos to automatically delete?

^genuine answers bar the obvious welcome. I just feel that you would only post pictures on social media that they want to show off anyway, so why would you want it to delete? And if you don’t want all trace of it gone, why share it in the first place? Why not just take the picture and keep it as a memory on your phone or cloud storage?

I think that the app is made to be sneaky and deceitful and that having the app shows that you have something to hide.

So as not to drip feed as I’m sure the questions will come - yes, DP downloaded the app knowing my feelings on it after first downloading it a couple of years ago. I know he’s just got it because a lot of people from work have it and he has FOMO, but he doesn’t understand why I am so uncomfortable with him having it. He has now deleted it but only for a quiet life.

So AIBU?

I flipping hate said app. I am a pastoral care teacher in a secondary school and I have seen my fair share of app issues. This one is THE WORST!

Used almost solely for bragging, bullying and sending pictures of your fanny

Oh yeah. And so grown women can take pictures of themselves with rabbbit ears on a filtered makeup and receive 283728 comments telling them how gorgeous they are

Because people want to do want things and not have a permanent record of it.

And the obvious nude pics

It's important to know that, even though things delete automatically, they can be screenshotted so it is not as private as it sounds

My friends tend to use it for sending baby photos.

But I can see how we’re probably in a minority!

I use it for a bit of fun but I can see why you could think some people may use it for under hand reasons.
There is an option to save all your photos before you send them, which I use because they are normally funny pics of me and my kids.
In your case tho it sounds like there at be more backstory? Have you got trust issues?

Another confused one. What is the point of deleting automatically? Have they never heard of screenshots?

My DD uses it for posting endless filtered selfies. She is 12 though.

Isn’t it the main cool-kids app at the moment?

I’ve only got it because my nieces and nephews, and teenagers I work with, all have it as their default social media

They don’t use Facebook at all, and hardly use Instagram. It’s all about the snap, apparently...

Ivor yes I do get that, however, you would only save something if you chose to do so?

The main feature is still that everything deletes.

And yes, sending fanny/dick pics is my first thought. I see no other logical reason why you would need everything to be deleted.

I sometimes have a laugh with the filters and send silly videos to my friends. It’s just a bit of fun really.

My nephews use it as standard to communicate with their friends. My sister sees their account and says there isn't anything particularly sinister.

TBH, if I were to use any social media it would be that. I hate the idea of things being online forever more that can be tracked to me, and I have nothing to hide (fairly boring mainstream life). I also don't like the idea that things my dc do while they're stupid teens will be findable by anyone who wants to forever more, as a matter of principle.

But in fact I just stay off social media and that works well enough for me...

I use it to send quick messages to my family to annoy them. I dont give them enough time to screenshot so they can't prove I annoyed them.

I don't use it that often though to be fair. But I like having screenshots of friends lives that I can just tap through rather than having to watch ages of video or photos that would drive me crazy on places like fb etc.
And the dogs. I follow a group of dogs and their stories always make me happy

Perhaps it saves using up masses of memory by having reels of endless photos. TBH I’d be quite happy if my phone deleted the billions of random photos Dd2 managed to take.

A bit tickety. About 4 years ago there was an incident with someone from our group of friends (when we lived overseas). From what I know they told each other they’d always fancied each other and that was it. We left the country the next day but he planned to meet up with her when we returned, which we never did.

I have massive insecurities which I know is my own problem, and he’s given me no other reason not to trust him since then.

And you could quite easily post something on Facebook etc and then delete it off your phone.

And if you don’t want something online forever, don’t post it? or just delete it if you change your mind after?

We use it all the time for messaging, with on family, friends and hobby groups
No rude pics, sometimes funny or shocking ones, or silly , but nothing I couldn't show my Nan.
It's fun, you don't end up storing or saving a billion photos to go through later.
It means it doesn't keep asking if you want to share the pics on other platforms, for Facebook to throw back at you 4 years later, etc
It's super fast and fun to edit pics and place stamp them.
It means my dd is willing to send me clips of her singing as she knows I'm not saving them
These are just a few reasons off the top of my head of why we use snapchat, that have zero to do with keeping secret, bullying or sex

I understand those of you who use it to communicate with family or your teenage kids, but our son is 1 and no one else in either of our families uses it.

To send dirty pics to your significant other-that is until you realise they can screenshot... Having said that you'd have to be lightening quick to screenshot in say, 3 seconds Grin

Seriously though, it actually was created to send nude photos. It used to be called picaboo.
