Ok so last night dp picked me up, as he did so I squirmed and he dropped me, from over a metre, straight onto kitchen floor, right on my coccyx. Initially I couldn't move, led on the floor for 5 mins in agony before turning over and managing to get myself up, the pain is horrendous and only relieved slightly by sitting down, everything else brings tears to my eyes, getting up, walking, sitting down initially, bending etc etc managed to get to sleep in early hours and woke at 6 needing loo, took me a good five minutes to get off the bed and walk to loo, where it took me so long to try and sit on the loo I accidentally peed myselfBlush
I had some trampoline left over from a few yrs ago when I had a dental access so found those in the first aid box and have had 2 of those this morning, it's helped slightly but not taken away the pain completely.

I'm not sure what to do?? obviously it might be bruised or it might have fractured but there's not much anyone can do either way, but hoping they can give me some prescription strength painkillers as ibruofen and paracetamol last night didn't even touch the pain. Apparently they don't usually X-ray for this injury but I have read if they do a pr (yuk) they can feel whether it's broken or not.

That much pain, yes go to a & e

I would ring 111 and let them decide. If they feel you don’t need a and e but just stronger painkillers they will arrange for you to see a doctor today.

I'd go! If you can sit in the car to get there... poor you.

Sorry but trampoline made me laugh! That’s the last thing you need!

I think you should go to a&e.

  1. I bruised/broke mine last November. It's very painful and difficult to move. I dont think it requires A&E though. An out of hours dr will be able to prescribe stronger painkillers.

You poor thing. Try 111 and see what they say.

Yes, 111 rather than A&E, and see what they say. I do feel for you - about 20 years ago I slipped on ice and landed on my coccyx and I can still remember how bad the pain was - it's excruciating.

Do you have a local walk in? They can give you a prescription

I am a doctor. Yes go to A and E. You are in a lot of pain. Perfectly reasonable.

TheHungryDonkey · 15/10/2017 07:43

Go to A and E. I never say that lightly, but when I was 11 I fell from 2m onto my coccyx, didn’t go to the doctor for a couple of weeks and have had nearly thirty years of terrible pain since. The pain never went away even though there’s no mechanical Injury there.

Ok, thanks, I hate making a fuss about stuff but the pain is ridiculous and I've been through pain relief free childbirth 5 times so not a wuss!
I live semi rural so we have a local minor a and e which I've looked up online and they open at 8.30 today so am going to get dp to take me there in a bit.

A&E - don't bother with 111, they'll just have you waiting hours for a call back. People ring 999 and go to A&E for ridiculous reasons, but this wouldn't be one of them. They may want to X-ray you. My friend had a badly bruised coccyx, and they x-rayed her.

I wouldn't try your local MIU, they are normally staffed by nurses only and I've found they are fine if you've sprained your ankle/need antiobiotics etc but not great if you've done something worse. I'd go to a full A & E with a Doctor and Xrays available even if it is a bit further. You won't get any decent pain relief either.

Went along to local one, they think it's prob broken but said no point in X-ray as treatment the same anyway so have given me codine and said take with ibuprofen and paracetamol together, which I have and it has taken the edge of the pain a little. I got to a and e as they opened and lucky for me no one there so dr saw me straight away!

You need a rubber ring to sit on maybe. Or sit on a cushion you can use to press in when you’re getting up from sitting down or sitting down from standing up.

Tell your bloke he can take over all chores for now and do some fetching and carrying and not to pick you up again.

gamerchick · 15/10/2017 13:38

Send him for some ibroprophen gel painkiller to rub in. It’s good for broken ribs so worth a shot.

Report
FridgeCut · 15/10/2017 13:40

Sit in a washing basket full of cushions, might help.

Do see your GP if you are in severe discomfort. There are other treatments available, eg local injection.

I smashed my coccyx up when I was 13 (now 35) - ironically given your typo on a trampoline!

Subsequently had it surgically removed when I was 21

Get a foam donut cushion - if you pop it in a pillow case that helps with it shedding bits of foam everywhere

Once you're healing and able to sit then if you do a desk job I recommend a wedge cushion with a coccyx cut out

Also make sure you take Lactulose or Movicol with any opioids as getting bunged up is the last thing you want when your tailbone is hurting

Good luck!

(FYI steroid injections may be offered by a pain clinic if the pain hasn't resolved after a number of months - I think I had my first set when I was 15. Most cases self resolve after a few weeks of sitting on a ring cushion, very few cases will get to my stage of having had steroid injections, denervations and a coccygectomy)

You've had an accident, you're in pain. Accident and emergency is the appropriate place.

I hurt my coccyx landing on it while roller blading as a teenager. Had to crawl home and was in agony for days. Took months to heal. Glad you've got decent painkillers now.
