To report an untaxed and MOTed car?

I live in a terraced house and there are enough parking spaces for each house to have two spaces each. All but one house has been abiding by this.

The house on the end has two working cars that they use, and one vintage car that stays parked all the time. They've been parking in a neighbours space without permission for the past two weeks since buying the second working car, and that neighbour has now parked their second car in my additional space. If they'd asked, I wouldn't mind, as I've only got the one car and I always park in a particular space at the back of my house, but they've been parking it in that one rather than the free one on the front. Makes it a massive pain in the arse to get out in the morning as I'm on the wrong side of the road and I've got to lug any shopping over a main road to get it in.

Anyway I was walking past the vintage car and peeked inside out of curiosity. It's not got a steering wheel. I checked online and it's not taxed or MOTed and hasn't been since earlier this year. It's parked on their space at the side of the house, which is actually on a public road (the spaces on the back are not a public road, so they've fucked right up there).

WIBU to report it? The form says it can be done anonymously but I worry that it'll be pretty easy to figure out that it was me since them having this car has caused the other neighbour to park in my spot.

You say "vintage" -do you mean pre 60s? Pre 1977? Cars of a certain age will be tax and mot exempt

No. I don't think YABU to report it at all.

Don't expect too much though. The neighbour around here who thinks things like insurance and tax are optional extras is still driving the vehicle they declared as SORN months ago. (they never stopped driving it).

It's a 1971 car. Not exempt on a vehicle check.

Too right report. Untaxed cars is just cheating everyone else who does pay their road tax, and no MOT is just simply dangerous to other road users. I'd have no quarrels reporting an untaxed and out of MOT car.

Sounds like your immediate issue is your neighbour using your space without asking, not the house on the end.

I would start with knocking and asking them to move their car out of your parking space.

A 1971 car is tax exempt, I believe, but not MOT exempt. Although it's presumably a restoration job if it has no steering wheel, so can't be driven anyway.

It's not really your problem (without seeming harsh!). Seems silly to keep a restoration project with no space to actually park the thing. They could rent a garage or space in the area? Or just sell it?

They have a paved back garden with drive through where they could park the thing and SORN it, but they haven't.

By all means report but don't expect anything to happen. We had a car dumped in our road late one night when it broke down. It was left unlocked (handy for needing to move it for various large lorries trying to get past) with all its documents inside. It took a neighbour with police connections to get it taken away, and that still took two weeks.

I may be misunderstanding but do you actually own the spaces OP? It sounds more like there is a particular spot around the back where you like to park, and until now nobody else has used it as everyone has stuck with "their" usual spots? If so then YABU to expect nobody else to park there. And I'm not sure that you'd gain much by reporting the vintage car. Surely all that would then happen is that the owners move it to the private road around the back, where you like to park?

And if I've misunderstood your OP and the spaces are indeed privately owned, then the vintage car isn't actually parked on a public road?

I would. My neighbour seems to run a selling/buying business out of his house. (I suspect the taxman doesn’t know about it) and quite often leaves untaxed/no mot cars on the road for weeks. They way he parks can cause difficulty for me and few other neighbours getting on and off the drive.

I’ve reported him twice and I know another neighbour has. The cars have been clamped and one got towed off within a few weeks of us reporting.

We have a vintage car too but we’ve declared it sorn for 6 months of the year. It’s so easy to do, no excuse not to really.

The spaces on the back are allocated with numbers, where I usually park my car. The front has 5 spaces, and two at the side in front of the gates which divide the public from private road. The space where the car is parked is on the side space which is on the private road. There are 7 houses on the row. Can do a diagram if needed.

If you have two spaces but only use one I'd talk to the neighbour in your space and ask that they use the other one instead. Make sympathetic noises about their spaces being used and see what they say. I'd probably report it as well though

Okay, diagram done. I live at number 5. Number 6 is parking in my private road space because the third car from number 7 is being parked in their private road space. There's 14 spaces (highlighted in pink), 7 houses, and no other houses around to compete with for the spaces (hence the farm and my shite attempt at drawing a pig )

A 1971 car doesn't need to be taxed. If it's parked in the owner's own numbered space then it's not on the road. I would have thought it would be OK without an MOT if they're not driving it. Obviopusly they can't if it's got no steering wheel. Not entirely sure though. Why not just ask the other neighbour not to park in your space?

Vintage car is parked on the side space which is in front of the gates. The gates are where the public road ends and the private road starts - hence the vintage car is on the public road.
