I read somewhere that they do it to save time, if they're really obvious from the start then they automatically weed out anyone with an ounce of sense. Rather than spending hours/days/weeks emailing with someone who then smells a rat.

Poor abandoned long-lost cherub.

Interesting theory!

And worrying that there's so many people who fall for it despite the obviousness.

I wonder how this is similar to abusive relationships ... on one hand, I read that rapists like to test their intended victim's boundaries to see if she'll fight back, but then there's the fact that men who are abusive within a relationship hide their intentions very well at the beginning.

I suppose with targeting specific people, they can tell who is vulnerable without very obvious boundary-testing.

YABVU to think this is a scam.

I think cherub is going to be my new nickname for my ds. Its very underused.

Well I'm not sure - some of the posts I see on here have a similar approach to the English language. Maybe the sender is dyslexic or has a particularly aggressive autocorrect function. YABU for being such a SPAG snob.
