Unhappy about Monday closing

Nothing, literally nothing, is open on a Monday. I'm at the stage of wanting to write to my council about it. A straw poll of my part time working colleagues reveals that over 80% of us have Monday off. WTF are all the museums and half of the cafes closed?! Why don't these places realise they are missing out on loads of business. Let me know if I'm missing something before I complain.

Are you in Dublin?

If you are off on Mondays too, maybe that explains the problem. Grin

Maybe other people want Monday off same as you

If you're off could you volunteer to man a museum?

Whereabouts are you?

Its Bank Holiday on Monday next week here in England. Schools will be closed and some businesses, but not all. Many many shops are open, most museums and other tourist type attractions are open, many restaurants and cafes are open, supermarkets are open etc. A lot are on Sunday opening types but open none the less.

Because the people who work all weaken in those places need days off? Monday is typically the quietest day in shops/museums/restaurants etc. When I ran a bar the only day we closed was Monday, because no one came in. I'm surprised Monday is the most common day your part time friends have off.

Because they open on a Saturday and Sunday, and therefore close on a Monday.
What would you want the council to do to make a cafe open?

They often close Monday because of opening at weekend. When I worked for a big department store we were shut on Mondays.

Can't you amuse yourself for a day? Read a book? Go on a walk?!

Small businesses like cafes may like to be open at the w/e (or just Sat) to get the boost in trade and then they still want a day off so pick Monday as it is the quietest day (and is adjacent to Sunday).

Why don't you change your day off instead?

I'm in West Yorkshire. I totally understand that places need to close for staff time off, particularly those that are open all weekend, I just don't see why they all choose Monday when loads of people take the day out to care for pre-schoolers. God I'd love to be child free and volunteering. Have I got it wrong? Am I overestimating the number of places closed or people taking Mondays off with small children?

Sorry, just re read and you mean any Monday.
Round here most places ARE open on a normal Monday.

I've got Monday off because my parents work Tuesday to Saturday and I want to see them some Mondays. I assume my friends have it off because Monday or Friday are, for obvious reasons, the most popular days to have off.

I literally everything closed? Small independent coffee shops I get but I can't imagine that Starbucks or Costa are closed. This of course assumes that you have the chains where you are.

If it is the independent cafes then let them know. They might change their day if they know there would be trade on a Monday.

The only places around here which are closed on a Monday are hairdressers. Everywhere else is open

Lots of small businesses shut Monday/Tuesday here so that they get all the weekend trade, although many will open Bank Holidays. I'm in the Lakes so we get a huge amount of weekend trade compared to the weekdays.

I wonder if it's the museum I'm thinking of. If it is I don't think there are any Starbucks or Costa near it. I don't live that far away and half the shops here are closed Sunday - Tuesday.

I remember when John Lewis used to be closed on Mondays. Civilised days now long forgotten.

I've only seen small independent shops and takeaways close on Monday. As PP said because they work Saturdays and sometimes Sundays but don't actually want to never have a day off

If it's such a problem you could always change your day off

West yorkshire? Grin ah you might have the same problem that we do here.
Monday was traditionally laundry day and Tuesday ironing day ror something along those lines iirc. which basically has resulted in a tradition that Monday and Tuesday out of peak season things are closed down. We still have Wednesday early closing which used to be market day or something I believe. Traditions can be hard to break and it is very frustrating when you forget and want to go for a meal during the day. Peak season here you will find everything is open on monday and tuesday and heaving with people. Perhaps this is part of the problem if you are in a touristy area?

Museums close on Mondays because they need to be open at the weekend when potential visitors are off work, but they still need one day every week to be able to open the display cases and deep clean.
Twenty minutes round with the hoover and windolene every morning before the hoardes come in isn't going to cut it if you want a fresh, clean museum with nice paintwork, fulling working loos, an academic research programme where people need to come in and handle the objects, and regularly changing displays!

Where I live Wednesdays are half day opening, it's so annoying I feel your pain! God forbid I run out of something on a Wednesday!

Whilst it is true that most/all of the Leeds musuems/art galleries are shut on Mondays there is still a wealth of other things to do in Yorkshire, and tbh most pre schoolers have a pretty short attention span at museums.
Mov your museuming to another do and make mondays your park day, walk in the hills day, market day etc.
