I want to conduct a survey on the effect a coloured mug has on the taste of a brew.

Is it just me who can't drink tea from mugs that are painted anything other than white on the inside ?? It never tastes or looks right.

Dp just did the shakey head thing, ds drinks coffee and always uses the same, white mug so he was useless. What say the tea brewer's of mumsnet ??

Me too. I like a white inside and I prefer it to be a certain size and shape. It doesn't taste right if the inside of the mug is coloured. I laso don't like it if the lip of the mug is too thick.

I have 2 white painted inside, 1 pink and 1 black. I'm sure the black one tastes different to the others. Don't know how or why. I still use it though as I love the mug and it doesn't taste bad, just different. Stronger I think.

I hate drinking out of dark coloured cups/mugs. Needs to be white or very light coloured. Glass mugs are fine too only if it is clear glass, hate the smoky/dark glass mugs that were all the rage in the 80's/90's and dm still has. As for plastic mugs, dont even go there. Bleurgh, dp says I talk shit and how else would you drink tea from a flask you dont.

Yup colour and size of mug is a make or break deal for hot drinks. My worst nightmare is a hot beverage served in ANY mug from the Disney store.

It is absolutely the case that only some mugs are suitable for tea drinking while others are destined for a career in coffee. Doesn't have to be white in my case; I also have a green, yellow and even brown mug that I use for tea, but they have other redeeming features that make them suitable for tea. But once designated a tea mug they can never be used for coffee (and vice versa).

OK coffee is one thing.
It's a spoon of instant in the cup. Or filter, or beans that are brewed in an other vessel. The only thing that will affect the taste is milk added after, the mug colour may affect how much is added. Personally I think coffee can take a bit of meddling and imperfection.

Tea brewed in a mug is a whole different thing. I put the tea bag in, water, then walk away for several minutes with no stirring. i use a white mug at home and can judge the milk after brewing. If I end up with a darker mug it's hard to judge the milk even with the correct brewing process but I survive.

But OMG if you end up with someone who pours hot water over a tea bag, stirs loads, take bag out, adds milk. A dark mug interior is only going to cause distress

I have my favourite mugs, but for me it's based more on what the mug's made of and the shape of it rather than the colour. I prefer the taste from pottery than bone china and I don't like narrow tall mugs. I have some glossy white mugs that I don't use as I don't think tea will taste right (prefer a colour or pattern on the outside) and I recently gave an unused Marmite mug to charity because I felt sick at the thought of drinking out of that one (even though I like marmite to eat!).

So glad I'm not alone with my tea demands! DH also does the shaking his head thing at my insistence of drinking from white, preferably thin mug or preferably still not a mug at all but a cup.

He also can't work out my logic of being able to drink 2 or more cups of tea but recoil in horror and being given a massive mug full. I remain convinced it tastes better in a cup. Milk first, obviously - which gets me the shaking head reaction again.

I had loose leaf English breakfast tea today served in bone china cups - tea doesn't get any better than that for me.

Ooh I've found my people! DH takes the piss out of me about my 'mug rules', I shall take great pleasure in telling him it's not just me I have different cups for tea and coffee and even different ones depending on the time of day. I have a slightly smaller one for first thing in the morning and then a particular one I like for my breakfast cup of tea plus an extra for lunchtime or afternoon. Then I have a separate coffee cup for after tea, and yes, they all have white insides. I hadn't actually realised DH knew it matters which cup for which drink/time until he started telling my DM all about it although I should have realised since he brings me the right one 9 times out of ten when he makes a drink

I'm a coffee drinker but it has to be a white, thin (pref bone china) and non adorned mug. I make an exception on the adornment for my one with a cute puppy on it as it is otherwise perfect.

We've got a few of the Ikea 365 mugs knocking about and they are really thick, they just make the drink taste wrong. My favourites are actually from Wilko and as crap as chips, so it's not a snobbery thing.

Plates etc have to be white and round. Cutlery has to be slim. My parents use an old fashioned silver service and it's awful to eat with.

I agree on the mug colour. I think your brain can't judge the strength properly in a coloured mug so it makes it a tense experience!! I'm not a fan of what we call "cup tea" ( bag in cup) but it will do. Much prefer a teapot or my best ever purchase, a Heston by Sage tea machine thingy

I have an entire shelf of white stacking mugs, the cheap IKEA ones with the little silly handle are perfect for tea the way I like it, I don't know what they are made of but can't find anything else that works as well, it saddens me that they are so ugly though.
