Bumply I work for an American company and they hold hackathons in all their locations around the world... I think it's considered an okay term for people in the tech industry as its quite a common event these days, not just with American companies but startups, tech companies, corporations etc.

My teenager and I use it frequently in a jokey way. Like when I bumped into doorway earlier she shouted "life hack! Try walking through the empty space to have an amazing pain free experience!"
I quite like adulting though but doubt I'd ever say it out loud.
