....for a 3 or 4 day city break? Just got back from Budapest and loved it. Also big fan of Berlin and Amsterdam and am looking for inspiration for the next adventure. Thanks in advance for any tips 😃

I went 20 years ago. Am sure it's changed a lot since then but I wasn't a massive fan to be honest. Have you been to Krakow?

No but the friends we go with have and want to try somewhere new 😊

No, I wouldn't.
Boring.

Try Vienna next door?

Yes. Loved it. You can take a boat to Vienna for a day too.

4 days is way too long, not enough to do there... Do 2/3 in Budapest and hire a car to drive to Bratislava. Beautiful drive of 2 or so hours with Esztergom on the way

Krakow or Prague are musts. Bratislava was fine for a day trip - 4 days would be way too long as the old centre is quite small.

Hmmm it's sounding a bit boring, will reconsider and think of somewhere else. Thanks for all comments 😊

I loved it! But there is not a lot there so I'd twin it with Vienna as well if you were planning 4 days. I think Bratislava has a lot more charm than Vienna, and is much more rustic. Vienna is just like any modern city really and costs twice the price of Bratislava. You can take the bus between the 2 cities or take the boat - both are cheap and its only about an hour or so (its been 5 years since we went so I'm a bit foggy about the details). We did it on a mini rail trip: Budapest - Vienna - Bratislava. I love Central Europe!

Otherwise, Dubrovnik is lovely. Or what about Ljubljana and Lake Bled? I've never been there but its next on my list!

I'm going there in July. Arriving midday, staying 2 nights and then leaving the following morning for Vienna. I reckon 2 nights there is plenty.

It is very interesting but not a standard 'destination' city. Lots of old, run down areas and hip little places. Some wonderful architecture. It feels like the archetypal ex-Soviet satellite capital city. I loved it.

Ljubljana is unmissable.

I went this time last year and LOVED it. Beautiful scenery, lots of art galleries, pretty streets to wander down and good coffee!

Sounds fab! But then most of the eastern block countries are gorgeous. Smile

Tbilisi is great. Maybe a little far for a city break though!

Porto or Lisbon are really amazing too, and judging by the other cities you have mentioned that you like I think they would be a good fit!

I have friends who are just back and they loved it!
Have you considered Wroclow or Gdansk? I like the looks of both of t
hese cities.

Riga and Tallin are also on my list for the future.

We have been to Budapest about 3 years ago and loved it and I really like the idea of driving from Budapest to Bratislava. Must look into that!

I love eastern / central europe

We did a five day trip to Vienna a few years ago. The best part of that was the day trip (by train) we did to Bratislava. I'd love to go back to Bratislava again one day. Vienna was boring and it was revolting having to dodge all the cigarette butts all over the ground.

Later this year, we're doing four nights in Prague and four nights in Krakow (as part of a wider European/UK trip). Can't wait!

We went to Vienna last year and did a day trip to Bratislava. I think more than 2 days there you may be bored. It is nice and I found it interesting seeing the contrast between the rich and well maintained government buildings and the beautiful but neglected architecture in the poorer parts. Beer and food is really cheap though as a plus.

I did Prague and Bratislava back to back. Loved Prague, and was enchanted with the old town in Bratislava as it is less commercialised than Prague. Lovely little shops, great coffee and easy to walk around.

I went to Vienna in March and had cakegasms in cafe Central. The architecture wasn't bad either, and some of the shops around the back of the cathedral were interesting, plus I went to Mozart's house, which was a big thrill.
