AIBU?

AIBU to think making phone calls in the toilet is weird?

In my office we have a lot of contractors from other countries, and it seems to be a daily thing where they'll go into the toilets to make phone calls (presumably to friends/family as they are speaking their own language).

Is it just me or is the toilet a really weird choice? I find it really annoying. I'm trying to tinkle and I've got people shouting down the phone in the next stall over!

My OH does this at home as well, it is very weird imo and I always ask where he is if we are talking on the phone and l cant hear the tv in the background.

I would welcome this as I am uncomfortable with people hearing my 'toilet noises'. If I had my way there would be white noise played in the loo at all times. You don't know how lucky you are.

That's what the hand dryer is for, you wait for that to go off and then make your noises strategically!

This is just annoying!

What if there's no hand dryer? WHAT IF THERE IS ONLY TOWELS! I've been trapped in toilets for several hours waiting to fart. In the end I had to roll up a cardigan and use it to muffle the sound.

The students where I teach do this - the women anyway. They're in there talking away, standing by the mirrors not in cubicles, and give you the evils for daring to go in to actually use the loos.

It gives me great pleasure, after I've washed my hands, to spend a very long time using the hand dryer. They always go away, I've got greater staying power than they have. Grin

I tried something similar by being excessively noisy in the stall, banging about putting things on the hook and violently pulling toilet roll out of the dispenser. It seemed to exacerbate the matter though and she got louder and I got louder until it was too ridiculous and I had to stop.

I was most put out during a particularly windy episode when I realised there was someone in the loos on a call on speaker phone!!! I could hear both ends of the conversation. Most disconcerting.

This is one of the most bonkers things I've ever read on here

Don't see anything wrong with it? Why is it weird? Or annoying? Am I missing something?

I agree. Now THAT is odd.

Where else could they go that's private?

An empty meeting room, take a walk outside, their car, a single table in the restaurant.

I just think it's weird! You can hear people going to the toilet, they're not the cleanest of places, if there are hand dryers that's REALLY loud. I just don't get why you'd want to have a phone call in there.

I just don't get phone calls, long chats face-to-face or any other form of lingering in a loo. Same as I don't get why you'd be embarrassed about actually making toilet sounds and smells in there. It's why toilets are in a separate room with a bit of privacy. To keep the unsavoury stuff contained away from the rest of the building and the people in it.

But then people object to public phone calls. My family all work long hours/shifts, so we can't always time calls and I'd rather call in the toilet, than on the bus, for example.

If I waited until I was home, as I'd often suggested, there'd be weeks that I didn't speak to one of my DDs etc.

You farted into your cardigan?

Report
OhSoggyBiscuit · 15/02/2017 12:34

That would be my cue to shout "Oh would you look at the size of that! Boy that felt good coming out! Cor!" loudly until they give up and leave.

Usually I wait until the toilet is empty or coincide my sounds with any loud noises but on this occasion there was a constant flow of quiet people. To cover my fart noise I folder up my cardigan to muffle my noise. It was a one off.

Did you put the cardigan back on afterwards? Confused

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one more interested in Cardigangate than in the actual subject of the thread. Grin

I find this weird. However, a mum used to do this at a school, during a sports club session. Turned out it was where she could get best reception.
