I got the following text:

HMRC has completed your tax review, £262 is outstanding to be paid back to you, Please use secure link to process your refund.

AIBU to be suspicious?

Don't they just pay extra with your next pay date?

Thanks

They send a cheque for the refund, in my experience. Sounds like a scam to me.

Definite scam, they would never text.

In fact any emails saying you're due money from somewhere and include a link should be treated as scams.

I haven't clicked on the link they sent but I would soooo love the £262 right now! Sad

I have recently had a tax refund
They sent a letter giving me the details and I was able to then complete an on line application and received the monies direct into my bank account
HMRC do not send email re refunds....always has to be letter communication first step

They will always write and send a cheque. Not email or text.

It's a scam. If you hover over the email address you'll see its from a randomised email address.
Here's an exciting email I got, and the source Hmm

Have you submitted a self assessment return? If not, a scam. If you have, do you have a personal tax account?
If so, go to direct.gov.uk don't follow a link from a text and go to the taxes information and log in and there should be a secure message.

Look at the full email address. It's probably a series of numbers ending shaw.ca. HMRC never email about amounts owed or due. Don't click on any links. HMRC ask you to forward the email, in its entirety, to an address you can find on their website. There are loads of scam emails being sent out right now.

HMRC do email if you're signed up for it - but they never put a weblink in their emails. They instead tell you to log into your account to read the message.

Its a scam to get hold of your bank details. I had one and an email stating I was due a tv license refund
I forward them to the 'phishing address'

Here's an exciting email I got, and the source

Looking at that email you don't even have to hover over the link to know it's fake - "it have been decided" is the giveaway. Also "Your application with HRMC" is clunky English.
