To be pleased to have won a weekend in Chesterfield?

Went to a barbecue earlier, a charity event rather than a private barbecue, iyswim.

Bought some raffle tickets for the cause - a hospice. Had wine, burgers, the usual. One of the blokes 'hosting' the charity evening announced the first prize as...
"A weekend in Chesterfield". My parents bought the tickets but left early as, knowing them, they would feel a 'do' like this is beneath them - more of a 'don't in their eyes than a do' iyswim. My DM probably didn't like the fact she wasn't the centre of attention! Anyway, enough of a 'snapshot' of my family, at least my D parents bought a load of tickets, and we won the weekend in Chesterfield!

YANBU I love Chesterfield, the Spire, the market, shops in the centre and so much to do in the area.

Lovely - I didn't realise there was a Spire - am really looking forward to it!

If you're in a pub in Chesterfield and can see the church spire pointing straight up to heaven, it's time to stop drinking.

V close to Chatsworth, Peak District and Sheffield (museums, galleries, restaurants etc). I wouldn't snuff at a w/e in Chesterfield, although it is less than an hour away.

Where are you staying? I live in chesterfield and I like it! Plus, we're only a short drive to chatsworth, Matlock, Bakewell and lots of other lovely places.

The spire is famous for being twisted. Second the chatsworth recommendation. Lovely grounds and afternoon tea.

A weekend in Chesterfield could be absolutely love.

I worked in Chesterfield until last year, really miss it even though I'm only down the road. Nice little town, a decent amount of independent shops. If you're lucky you'll be there for the foodie market on a Sunday. Which hotel are you staying in?

Thanks for the Spire photo - actually - to address the comment of a PP - at the time the prize wasn't announced - the Spire aspect didn't click with me, but when it was mentioned in this thread - it does ring a bell!!

I grew up in Chesterfield! Definitely worth a trip up the Crooked Spire if it's open, and the market and Shambles are worth a look round. As a pp said, you're close to Matlock, Bakewell, Chatsworth and they're stunning!

EnglishGirl - haven't booked a hotel yet - actually - what it is - I might have been a bit misleading as that is exactly how the blokes who were hosting announced the prize - it's actually - free entry for 2 to a local theme park - which is actually close to Ilkeston. Dunno why they said Chesterfield.

We actually might stay in Nottingham and make it a footy/cricket?/theme park weekend!!

Don't go to the Crown & Cushion though, we used to get flashed by the clientele on an alarmingly regular basis! Are you going without Dc? Try the Brampton Mile.

Incidentally I just LOVE the Peak District- Bakewell, Buxton, Chatsworth, Eyam (poignant - but worth a visit)

A local theme park close to Ilkeston?? American Adventure closed years ago! Which one do they mean?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 20/08/2016 22:10

What's the theme park? I'm drawing a blank! Nottinghams nice enough but nothing you won't have seen in any mid sized city, I'd actually rather stay in Chesterfield 😊

What's the theme park?

I like Chesterfield, but would rather have a night in Nottingham if I got to choose.

A few of us puzzled by the theme park in Ilkeston!

I thought American Adventure too! I used to love it there.

If you're doing the Brampton Mile Dynasty Chinese restaurant was always a good place to line your stomach before a night out. Ditto Massarellas a bit further down Chatsworth Road. Shame the Bradbury Club is no more. Spent many happy nights there! Smile
