So we're putting the DC to bed earlier and DH casually drops into conversation that he will take them tomorrow morning to see his friend and pick up a deer. Not stopping there, he explains that they will have to skin the deer and chop it up for the freezer, at which point dc1 (4) dissolves into floods of tears. Luckily dc2 (2) wasn't paying much attention.
I am 33 weeks pregnant with dc3 and in the process of filling the limited remaining space in our upright freezer (NB not chest freezer!) with batch cooked meals in preparation for the busy time ahead and do not want the space to be filled with every conceivable cut of venison. Not that it would fit...nowhere near.
AIBU to have subsequently told DH that there is no way we will be collecting the deer tomorrow and that he was absolutely thoughtless to have gone into such detail with the DC?
In his defense, DH grew up in a rural area of a country where all aspects of farming and subsequent butchery were par for the course, and I love venison and will always welcome the odd joint of it during the season. I therefore don't think he's a complete knob, but just thoughtless in terms of space, timing (having not discussed it with me previously) and having been quite so detailed with the DC. AIBU?

I'll have it . But seriously, I feel your pain. Crammed freezer plus more stuff that needs freezing = stress.

And obviously he should know that dealing with the reality of killing and eating bambi needs dealing with sensitively with young DCs.

I should possibly add that I'm on child care duty single handed for the entire bank holiday weekend too due to DH converting our loft space on his own.
Deer butchery is going to take up a lot of precious, precious time. I think he's underestimated that too.

Reminds me of when my grandad called us once and told my mum that he had got a reindeer. Now he lived in Lapland so the idea that he had an actual live reindeer was very plausible so my mum asked where he was keeping it... in the freezer!

Rivertam I couldn't agree more. And o would hope it was obvious from my OP that there isn't much of a sentimental approach to meat in our household.
But it's one thing knowing where your meat comes from, and another to talk about skinning and chopping up the deer...especially at bedtime when hysteria is never far away.

Maybe DH didn't need to be so frank with DCs, although I'd want them to know where meat comes from ie not shrink wrapped packages in the supermarket, just not so brutally, perhaps.

I'd be a bit pissed off if someone vetoed what I could put in my own freezer tbh. Can't you compromise and make sure he agrees to take care of the cooking when the baby comes? Surely if he agrees to cook something fresh every few days you don't need to freeze the batches?

To a degree Nobility, it's just that there isn't any room already, let alone with my plans to try and get ahead (although capable and well intentioned, DH is self employed and doesn't take paternity leave and realistically is unlikely to do much cooking). It's only the bottom half of a fridge freezer, and by the time you've got chips, fish fingers, peas, sweetcorn, a spare leaf etc etc the freezer is full bar maybe a drawer. That is really not going to fit a whole deer!
