to think that this is torture? (Warning - Extremely distressing video)

So this happened in Georgia, where corporal punishment is allowed.

Basically, if the mother didn't agree to the boy getting a 'spanking', they would have had to suspend him and since the child has already missed 18 days, the mother would have been jailed.

Ok, in fairness it sounds like he was being very bold, but good God, can this be allowed?

Warning, if you do watch the video, you will probably feel very distressed, so don't blame me if you do! Kinda half sorry I watched it myself

I don't agree with any child being 'spanked' like that. However, there is far too much going on with this story to know what's going on. The mum could be lying and just be a shit mum who doesn't take the boy to school or discipline him hence his bad behaviour towards other children which could be repeatedly happening. It could be he is having appointments and his behaviours down to problems he has and is being treated for. We don't know enough to say from that article. Regardless the child should not be punished in that way and I'm shocked it is still allowed.

Yanbu btw. But then again I think the.mum could have intervened, she could have filmed the first half then walked away with him (( whilst still filming.)) They wouldnt have dared to.jail.her.

Although it could be argued that some of the YouTube DIY home cyst drainings (i.e. without proper anaesthesia) constitute torture.

I have not followed the link on this thread, but it surprises me that physical punishment as distressing as that described would not constitute assault. But then the US has odd ideas about some things, not least capital punishment.

I'm sorry the Mirror didn't have a bloody klaxon to be honest. I'm not right after watching that. I pretty much figured, how bad could it be. I just feel gut-wrenched for the little lad.

I don't know where to start! So it was the mum filming? Why? If she was so appalled then why film it, and so calmly? I see she posted it on fb, and I understand she risked a jail sentence, but really!?! I agree with the op and pp above, there must be more to this than meets the eye, but what is going on with the two "responsible adults' inflicting this punishment?
So we have a situation where violent behaviour is punished with violent behaviour? Well, I think that explains a lot. I don't mean to come over all Daily Mail, but it goes some way to explaining why some states in the US are right royally fucked up! What is the long term impact on that child? Is it an affective way of dealing with issues the parent might have? I don't think so.

Just awful. My whole family is from Georgia (my mum moved to the uk and that is where I was born). I have visited many times. They are extremely behind the times in many, many ways.

RomComPhooey The video doesn't actually show the actual spanking. It shows two teachers with a paddle? and a little boy maybe 4, crying for about a minute while they 'position' him for his spanking.

Even if I agreed with corporal punishment (which I don't) why is the boy getting the spanking? It is not a. 4/5 year olds responsibility to get themselves to school it's their parents. He is essentially being punished for something he has no control over.

He was being punished for hitting a boy and spitting at another child. I think the options were a spanking or suspension. If the mother had gone for the suspension, she would have been jailed for her child missing too many days from school and she is a single mother so they would have no-one to look after them I suppose.

What a great lesson for any child. If you hit we will hold you down and hit you harder with an object. Violence is wrong child, has our violence taught you that yet?

The mum was pretending to text whilst she was actually filming. Im sure the teachers wouldnt have willingly been taped. I dont care what he did, he is 5. Poor little thing, and its an awful position for the mum to be in. It is so shocking because it would never ever happen here.

I can only imagine the pain the mother went through while he was screaming for her help and she couldn't.
If faced with similar 'options', I think I'd have taken my chances with jail myself - though God only knows what foster care is like if that's school over there!

Well it is distressing and the boy is clearly upset but it's definitely not torture. It's one swat on the clothed bum with a paddle

The distress it is causing him is torture (mental torture) in my book. That and the fact that he now knows that Mummy can't protect him (sad thing for a little boy to learn).

Of course it's torture. Just because it's legalised torture doesn't make it better. That's why we don't allow such things in this country.

Given that there are some parts of the States where women can be arrested for having a miscarriage, unfortunately this doesn't surprise me at all. But it does astonish me that central government in the US doesn't do something to stop this sort of abuse.

I live in the US. Georgia is a very f*cked up state. But the US as a whole believes itself to be above what is generally accepted as 'normal' by the rest of the world - see above, for example.
