Just realised I've forgot my thyroxine medicine this morning. Already feeling exhausted. WIBU to ask if I could pop home to take it? I only live 10 mins away.

I assume you're at work? Offer to take it out of your lunch hour?

Could you just make a quick dash home in your lunch time instead of voicing it?

If I miss a dose of my thyroxine i would take it later.

At any job I've had that would be no problem. I would do it.

Are you really meant to take it on an empty stomach? I've never done that in ten years . Do you all do that?

I don't think it takes effect that quickly, so I'm not sure you not feeling brilliant is related - it has a half-life of 6-7 days. If you feel you need to go, though, and your boss is OK with it - may as well.

30 min before any food or drink, I was told recently.

I was always told before breakfast. No idea why though.

I am on quite a high dose of thyroxine. I think if you are feeling knackered, it's not because you forgot to take your tablets a few hours ago. It's not like you take thyroxine and suddenly get a massive burst of energy.

Iam a Pharmacist, it's best to take on empty stomach before the first meal of the day but not crucial. It stays in your system for a long time and you will not notice any difference in symptoms missing a dose unless you are just commencing treatment. Taking it after work is fine.

Maybe doesn't matter, its just what pharmacist puts on sticker

Hmm

Ok, I might just swerve and take after work. I am just generally feeling crappy and shattered tbh even though I am sleeping solidly from 10-6

Calcium (eg in milk) reduces the absorption of levothyroxine from the stomach, and as its common to have milk with breakfast that's why you are advised to take it 30 minutes before breakfast.

If your boss is OK with it, go and get it. Only you know how you are feeling.

Im on thyroxin, honestly don't think missing one would make any difference.

I have to say, the exhaustion is probably largely psychological. Thryoxine has a long half-life.

But do remember not to consume any dairy in the same hour, it affects absorption. And yes, you're supposed to take it on an empty stomach, washed down with a glass of water. Some people prefer to take it before bed, as then nothing gets in the way of their morning cuppa.

The half life of thyroxine is such that it is hard to see why someone would feel the symptoms of not having taken their tablet just a few hours late. I agree with others that it is likely a sort of placebo effect.

Taking it this evening is completely fine. Indeed, when we have people who just can't remember to take their thyroxine at all, we get them to take their whole week's dose once a week. (Don't do that unless you are advised to by your own doctor, but it points out that it is perfectly to take this morning's dose tonight with no ill effects.)

As for when to take thyroxine, absorption is better taken on an empty stomach with no other medications or vitamins (particularly iron, calcium and indigestion medication).
