To 'double up' by using Christmas Cards as thank you cards for a recent birthday?

My child recently had a birthday with lots of lovely presents. We had just moved house and with the chaos of re-plastering everywhere and installing a new bathroom (had no shower for 5 weeks!!) the time whizzed by and I didn't get around to writing thank you cards. (I'm usually pretty good with these, especially for the children).

So it occurred to me that if I do the thank you cards now, I will be sending them to basically the same people in sending Christmas cards to. Stamps cost a pretty penny as it is.... So thinking about saving money and paper....

Could I write a simple "and thank you so much for "X's" birthday present, "X" loved it!' in the card itself. Or should I write it on a separate bit of pretty 'thank you' note paper (would have to buy), or should I get a photo of said child printed off with "thank you" written across it (child is 1 so can't write it himself!!)? Or should I go the whole hog and send a seperate card?

I kind of have no real emotion towards Christmas cards myself. See them as being a tad pointless and a huge waste of paper, but I have lots of elderly relatives who place huge importance on this kind of thing and would be offended if I didn't. The thank you cards/note is more important really.

A sentence or two in your Christmas cards is fine in my humble opinion.

Separate slip of paper seems the polite thing to do. Otherwise I'd see it as an afterthought, personally. No need for a second card though.

My SIL just did that (but I'm pretty sure you are not my SIL!) and I didn't mind at all!

I haven't sent any cards yet so definitely not me! (At this rate most of mine will have to be hand delivered anyway)

Get a picture of the birthday child (from party?) printed and write a quick note on the back "X loved the present" etc.

I would love a photo of the birthday boy/girl with the present tucked in a Christmas card! The fact you took a few minutes to make a personalised thank you would be very touching.

If I have time, I stick a photo of the kids in a Christmas card (both birthdays close to Christmas) , with thank you's on the back, but just didn't have the time or inclination this year.

I'm of the opinion that thank you cards can generally fuck off though. I'll send them very occasionally to relatives I never see who have posted things to the kids, but otherwise I don't bother.

I do it every year. Stamps are expensive these days! GPiL never seem to mind.

For ds' friends they'll get an note on their xmas card. For family we do a separated card but only because his birthday is too close to xmas to post them in time.
