Please help, I quit smoking just over three weeks ago, went cold turkey and I've been doing so well, not had
many cravings, been keeping busy etc.
And now, sitting here tonight with my glass of wine all relaxed, I've never wanted one more!
Please somebody come along with a tip to stop me rushing out to buy a packet??!

Really deep breathing. Big intakes of breath.

Then go to bed.

It does get easier.

Exit's right, go to bed.

I used to tell myself that if I really needed one that I could have one tomorrow. 7 years later and tomorrow is still around the corner...Wink

I am starting again at 70.

You've waited 3 weeks? Wait 12 more hours. If you still feel the same in the morning you can buy some then.

When I was giving up, alcohol and coffee were my biggest triggers.

I had to knock them on the head until I could eventually cope.

Maybe swap the wine for a pint of cold water?

Go brush your teeth . My friend swears by it

Don't waste those 3 weeks that's such a massive achievement

Eight years for me, after thirty years of heavy smoking. Week 3 was the hardest and I failed there in my previous attempts to quit. As the others have said, deep breath, drink of water, hold off tonight! You can do it.

I'm on 4 years and still in certain scenarios would love a fag, as others have said drink water or eat something, the most important part is that it will taste fowl and you will feel guilt if you cave in.

Report
WorraLiberty · 11/12/2015 23:31

You absolutely mustn't cave in

But if (and I do stress IF) for example you cave over the Christmas period (which is a fairly common time to cave), please get an e.cig instead of a packet of fags.

In my personal opinion, that would be like falling to the bottom rung of the ladder instead of falling completely off it, if that makes sense?

Thanks guys- I'm staying strong!
I swear I haven't really wanted one til tonight aaaargh
I need to remember it's digusting, it's expensive and it would have possibly eventually killed me!!!

I second an e cig or vaporiser if you do really want one, but you are doing really well. Clean your teeth and go to bed

Report
WorraLiberty · 11/12/2015 23:40

Is a vaporiser like a sort of big 'pipe' thing?

I keep seeing people puffing on them in the street and wondered if they were the same as e.cigs?

Sorry to hijack your thread with my question OP, but I didn't really want to wander up to a stranger in the street to ask Xmas Blush

I am totally LOVINH how clean my mouth always feels and I just feel cleaner and healthier which is such a huge motivation.
I am saving about £30 a week so that means I have saved about £90 so far which keeps me going aswell.
CanadianMum that's strange, week
3 must be a hurdle to get over!

E cigs are good. You can get ones that are zero nicotine and if you do decide to give it go I'd suggest menthol. You get more sensation and no tobacco taste.

Other than that. - deep breathing, do some labour type ones and an entirely unscientific suggestion that helped me was tomato juice. Tomatoes contain nicotine naturally and I figured it was worth a go!

No just fallen out with Dh and smoked a menthol after drinking a bottle of wine. I had given up for some years. Sad I might have another. Sorry no help!

I saw something on a show years ago that said 3 weeks is the clincher for most habits or addictions. So, for example if you can stick to a healthy eating plan, reduce or abstain alcohol or smoking, apparently once you get past 3 weeks you are on the way to it being your new habit. Think my mw also said this about sticking with bf.
That's not to say it is a distinct pivotal moment but just that when you've come that far it can seem silly to go back.
Good luck

No, I gave up years ago MrsWembley

My only regret is that I soldiered on (and off) with nicotine patches for so long, before giving e.cigs a try.

You're past the worst, put the wine down, brush your teeth and go to bed.

I found timelines like this really helpful when I gave up: whyquit.com/whyquit/A_Benefits_Time_Table.html

Just look how far you've come in 3 weeks! Well done!

Well that's me in bed, no cigarettes en route. Dh will be home
From work soon and I was tempted
To tell him to stop and get ciggies on the way home but I have managed not to!

Good for you,I found giving up easy when pregnant, but not easy any other time. I'm coming up two years fag free! I use a vape which has helped no end, Ive been dropping the nicotine level on the vape but struggle to get below 8, it's still way better for you than smoking.
Maybe a ecig or vape tank with liquid would help to keep as a back up.
I don't miss the smell of smoke one bit.
