I've never heard this term before but there are several threads on mumsnet

I wanted to ask the same question, I think from my initial reading (on mumsnet) it's a new way of describing what my grandma does at the first signs of snow (she lives in a valley and they used to get snowed in a lot!)

Taking in masses of food, water and medicines so you are able to live out a few months should society collapse or the apocalypse happen.

Should society collapse you will find me wearing a tiara sat next to the drinks cabinet having drunk everything within, including the 15 year old chambord crap that nobody likes.

Not eating tinned peaches in a sad, dank bunker.

I'm coming to yours for the apocalypse Time Grin

I'm set. I had a supermarket delivery today, got my Pol Roger (10 pounds off) for Christmas Day and a bottle of my favourite Glenmorangie Malt (once a year treat), so if the Apocalypse comes I will drink it all and die from alcohol poisoning - better than the zombies getting me.

With a username like yours Bastard you're absolutely welcome. So long as you bring some of that lovely fluorescent blue shite they put into cocktails at questionable establishments. Not had that for years.

Ahhhh, caracao, yep, can do. Are we preppers now then?!

Report
TimeToMuskUp · 09/11/2015 18:02

Fuckit, we've been seduced by the prepping nonsense. I'll make us badges. Just been reading through the preppers thread (the super long one) and I agree entirely with whoever said "If Ocado stopped delivering I'd lie down in the road and die". Everything else is madness; I tried prepping for DS1's birthday in October. The idiot DH ate all the lovely crap supplies I'd stockpiled.

Food etc for say a banking it glitch, power cut, illness etc.

Prepping = preparing. At the milder end you're keeping a fully stocked cupboard and supplies like toilet toll, torches, candles, first aid etc in case of illness, bank problems, floods, snow, other weather issues, etc that stop you being able to go out/buy products. At the other end you're stockpiling in case of war, societal collapse, zombies, etc.

In all seriousness though, I don't consider myself a 'prepper' at all (and have just poked a bit of fun at them) but I always have a week's worth of food and water in the cupboard/fridge. I think it's a control thing; I have an inherent fear of not being in control (well, I'm not in control of the DCs, but of everything else). I don't stockpile and I don't have a 'go' bag. But yeah, I have enough to see us through a freak snowstorm at any time of year, just because it's sensible.

"Hmm, i want to know what prepping is. I wonder where i could ask. I know, i'll avoid the prepping board that many posters have hidden due to being sick sore and tired of seeing the word prepping and i'll ask in AIBU even though it isnt an AIBU."

YABU. For not posting on the prepping board.

I've noticed a couple of the threads.

We recently had a large box (something like 12 or 15 bottles) of red win delivered from Laithwaites. That should be us sorted then.

Or should it be my contribution to Time's Apocalypse Party. WinkGrin We can all turn up with something.

SurlyCue Perhaps the OP didn't know where to begin to find the prepping board. I didn't and some kind person helpfully linked me to the board of lunacy preppers.

OMG - you drinking tiara-wearing party goers are so like totally missing the point! See "American blackout" - but basically the yuppie couple decide to weather it out by tucking into the caviar and champagne, but oh the humanity. The power is off so the champagne is luke warm.

What's with all the mental health comments?

SurlyCue · 09/11/2015 18:26

PaulAnkaTheDog · 09/11/2015 18:27

Well considering I didn't even know about a prepping board until a couple of days ago, I'd say yes really.

Popcorn anyone?

The corn keeps well in the pack before opening. Easy to cook too. Ideal for preppers, I should think.

Popcorn and red wine. Mmmmm.

Since when was prepping ever to do with preparing for the end of the world/zombies? I thought I was just for natural disasters at the most? Blush

Report
LineyReborn · 09/11/2015 20:12

It's keeping candles for power cuts, some tinned food and milk for being snowed in.

It's hardly 'lunacy'.

Some people have disabilities that would make it hard to go out in bad weather, or queue for long times, or cope in the dark and cold.
