Why do some peoples bell buttons go "in" and others go "out"?

I myself am an "outie".

Why?

I always thought it was to do with the way the cord was cut/clamped at birth. I'm probably really far off the mark here though.

I have an innie but would like to have an outie. People with outies, do you push it back in just to watch it pop back out again? Is it fun?

I've always thought (read somewhere) that an innie is the 'correct' belly button format and an outtie happens if the cord was clamped/pulled incorrectly at birth? Happy to be corrected though.

So someone may have incorrectly clamped my cord Jade?

Dd1 doesn't have a belly button at all

She has a little dip but its totally smooth -took an age for her cord to fall off!

Outies freak me out. I was dreading mine popping out during pg but fortunately it never happened. Ds's is just about an innie because he's so skinny.

Emo - that's interesting as my DC also had recalcitrant cord that took ages to fall off!

And they have outies!

I've never thought about it that much but...

Ds1 has a very deep innie. When he was born, I was bleeding too much so the midwife snipped the cord and whisked him off so they could see to me.

When ds2 was born, it was a quick, easy birth. Dh was asked if he'd like to cut the cord. I can clearly remember him (uncomfortably because he didn't want to but felt he should) trying to cut through the cord for an age...more difficult than it looks apparently. Ds2 has a slight outtie.

Is that coincidence or...

I was an outie until I got pregnant, then it got pushed out altogether and the outie bit fell off! Shock So now I am on innie.

The outie bit can fall off?!?! That's quite scary. Me and DP have innies but DS and DD have outies

penelope please explain!? I'm an innie but barely (ds' bump was the size of Kilimanjaro I swear) cousin was an outie til he was about 5 but he was a preemie so that might have something to do with it? Hmm

DS was an innie. At a few months old he developed an umbilical hernia (part of complications of being preemie) and although the hernia is gone, he is now an outie!

According to the second link that LazyLou posted the "outie" is quite rare.

And I don't want my outie to fall off! Shock

But surely your belly button is what holds your bum in place and if you play with it your bum falls off?!

Mine is out, I was a prem twin with a hernia!
