It made me feel ill. That planned parenthood, which many people think is an upstanding company, is like this. That this is how much respect for human life they have.

It's not visually graphic. An undercover reporter talking to the head of a planned parenthood franchise about the sale of fetal body parts, and the 'techniques' used to ensure the desired body parts are not damaged. Which equate to partial birth abortions.

I'm on a phone so the video is running slowly, Sorry, but is this showing that people having terminations with this organisation can sign a form to say instead of being disposed of the remains can be used in research? That is what I understand this video to mean, am I right op?

What is a partial birth abortion?

How do we know that the woman in the video is acting with the knowledge and consent of the Planned Parenthood organisation? She may be on a frolic of her own for her personal profit.

If the women concerned have consented to the donation of foetal remains in medical research and that is what is being discussed, then while the idea is distasteful, nothing illegal is being done. The researchers may be acting with the highest of motives to cure disease and alleviate suffering.

Or yes, this may be an organisation-wide cynical and illegal practice of partial birth abortions to provide foetal remains for sale.

Time will tell but I'm not jumping to any conclusions.

Whatapalaverama · 14/07/2015 16:39

They are not giving the parts for research, they are selling them, which is illegal. Partial birth abortion is where the baby is partially removed from the womb - born - before the 'termination' takes place. This is also illegal.

medical waste sold for research? is that the issue?

Report
FuzzyWizard · 14/07/2015 16:43

That is not a partial birth abortion unless the foetus is still living and provided the foetus is already dead is perfectly legal in the U.S as a way of preserving tissue for research. There is no evidence whatsoever that they are breaking any laws and the fetal tissue is being used in life-saving research not in Satanic rituals. Hmm

also this - they haven't even issued a statement yet - lets hear what this organisation, which helps women control their own bodies, has to say first - yes if individuals are breaking the law they should be dealt with - and IF the whole organisation was aware that should also be dealt with

to me it doesn't detract from the valuable work they do though

The video, if it is genuine, does indeedseem pretty incriminating.

I wonder how informed the consent is, of the women for the donation of fetal body parts. For example, do they understand that they will have a different procedure or preserve the body parts?

This also appears to be a commercial enterprise, which is against US law, as well as immoral.

I'm not clear about whether this constitutes partial birth abortion, but it does seem very suspect that the doctor was saying that the law was open to interpretation.

I haven't seen anything about this on any legitimate news websites, and therefore am willing to discount it out of hand.

I think this will be more widely reported in the UK in the next few days, American sites are carrying details. I really don't know what to think about this, but pretty sure women having terminations/thinking about having one will find this upsetting.

I'm not going to watch as I recently had an abortion. Could someone simply explain it to me? I don't know what partial birth abortion is, or indeed who this company are?

I never do the whole 'you should have warned us' thing, but this is a very unsettling thread to happen across in AIBU.

Report
hibbledibble · 14/07/2015 19:46

questioning it is pretty disturbing.

It features undercover reporters, posing a buyers of fetal body parts, having a discussion with a leading us abortionist. She talks about the organs which can be bought, their prices, and the procedure which is used to ensure the organs remain intact.

It appears that she discusses using 'partial birth abortion', which is where the fetus is manipulated into a breech presentation, the body delivered, and the head crushed, which ensures the organs remain intact.

At the end of the video the undercover reporter talks to the ceo of planned parenthood about buying organs from this doctor, implying that this is done with consent of the organisation.

I don't usually call for warnings either but this needs one and I haven't even watched the video. It sounds absolutely recolting asnd abhorrent. Today is the anniversary of the D&C for the first of my missed miscarriages so I may be being oversensitive, but it's pretty upsetting to stumble across this. As for the term "medical waste"...Sad

Questioning - from what I can see it's one doctor, in one organisation in the USA, it's not widespread. I hope my previous post dosent imply that I think women having/considering a termination SHOULD feel more upset because if this story, I really don't.
At the risk of being goady, I think this will be pounced on by anti-choice campaigners and used a stick to beat women with.

I worked for Planned Parenthood. It was one of the best women centered organizations I have ever had the opportunity to be employed by. PP provides excellent low cost, often no cost, reproductive health care to women and men in the US. We faced anti-choice garbage peddled like undercover news like this constantly. Our response was to continue to provide excellent care whilst ignoring those who attempt derail our ability to do our job.
