I mean presumably the man isn't against everything that's not in the bible....
I know it must be something that he holds dear and it's changing but heckling in York Minister...? Seems a cheap shot for media attention.

I saw that - they were ready for someone to do it. I wonder if he got swiftly removed from the building?
YANBU, it made him look ridiculous.

He a stupid idiot and looked so pathetic in the midst of such grace.

I am not religious in the slightest but good on the lady today.

a complete dick, a disrespectful dick and he needs to observe the process that has begun. It's taken decades to get this far, a lot of talking, negotiating and it's a done deal. Let Libby have her moment and enjoy being part of history.

And I don't care if saying hear hear makes me sound like a fool.

I watched as much of the service as the BBC would show and she was incredibly dignified throughout that unpleasant bit I thought.

That is awful. My Dad is a vicar and my Mum is in training and I would feel heartbroken if someone did this at their ordination. People don't realise it's a massive moment and the culmination of years of work and strong faith. I'm not religious myself but do respect other peoples convictions because I'm not a bloody moron!

Rev Paul Williamson. He's been at it for years. Just look at this article about him from 1997. He's run a long campaign of lawsuits against the Church of England on the matter of female priests and I must say it gives me a grim feeling of satisfaction to know his decades of protests have come to nothing.

This line in particular (from the 1997 article) made me sick: "More than a dozen of his cases have been heard in court. The Church of England has spent just under pounds 70,000 fighting them off." Think of all the good that money (and probably much more since) could have done.

Probably a daft question, but why hasn't he been sacked? I don't mean just for this btw, but linking to £70k worth of law suits etc... He's a bloody pest!

I didn't see/hear the incident you are referring to, I thought you meant a protester outside York Minster, but to hear he did it during the ceremony is really disgraceful.

Couldn't the C of E de-frock him or something, not exactly an ideal representation of Christianity is he?

Dr Sentamu knew that was coming and had all the law at his fingertips. The Rev had a right to protest and so it was 'allowed'.

Theboodythatrocked · 26/01/2015 16:30

Yes agree wish why isn't he sacked?

Report
wishmiplass · 26/01/2015 16:33

Well, yes, agree with right to protest - it's fundamental and enshrined in law and all that... but he seems like he's a bit of a trouble causer generally... surely CofE's employment lawyers would be able to deal with him?

I think the Archbishop knew it was coming. The guy shouted his short rant. The Archbishop read a prepared rebuttal. The guy left quietly. Police not interested.

Report
grovel · 26/01/2015 16:40

And, to fair, the guy was answering a direct question to the congregation from Sentanu. 999 people shouted "Yes". This guy shouted "No - it's not allowed in the Bible".

The (former arch deacon?) man who was commentating on the service did say that 'someone' was known for being set against this and then afterwards refused to name him just in case he was wrong. Everyone involved was obviously ready for him to pull some stunt.
I would have thought that with York being a public building he had the legal right to protest without being sanctioned for it.

Defrocking is a good idea.

If you've ever heard the recording of Paisley shouting at the Pope, and calling him the Antichrist and Spawn of Satan, you'll know what religious nutters heckling can be like.

While I wholeheartedly support the acceptance of women at all levels of the Ministry, right up to Archbishop, (after all the Supreme Governor of the Church of England is a woman!) this has and will cause problems in the wider Church. Many countries/sees outside Europe don't accept women even as priests, and have threatened schism.
The man was exercising his traditional right to respond to Dr Sentamu's question, "Is it your will...?" He didn't use abusive language.
Parishes who only want a male priest/bishop are accommodated by being allotted a man.
If one has women priests/vicars, one should have women bishops.

I can't understand how he is allowed to behave like that whilst in the employ of the CoE either.

We have a right to protest but if I started shouting nonsense against the policies of my employer at work I'd be dismissed.

Anyway, I digress. You're right OP. He's a dick.
