aibu to HATE sob stories like this!?

Ive put my Tv up for sale on gumtree for £50, just now I had a message from someone asking if I deliver, I said yes I deliver but only within x city, she then asks if I will take 40. I say no the price is non negotiable, which is fair as its a 28" tv only 3 months old we just don't need it anymore. She then says she has 2 kids and only 45 pounds to last until Monday... Aibu to detest sob stories like this? Either she's trying it on for a better deal or is terrible at managing her money. If I had 45 to my name I wouldn't go out and spend the vast majority on something so non essential...

She's trying it on. Stick to your £50 and don't answer any more messages that don't include "I will pay you the full amount"

If she REALLY only had 45 to last her to Monday she wouldn't be buying a tv. And if she HAS then she shouldn't be using 40 of it to spend on a tv! Ignore her.

I'd be spending my last £45 on food and heat for my children, not a tv. Ignore her.

She doesn't need a telly then does she!

She wants it delivered and £10 off too? Piss take!

Report
Cornettoninja · 02/01/2015 17:58

Message her back saying you're selling your telly because you've only £10 till next Friday.

Play sob story top trumps.

Why doesn't she look on free cycle? I've seen old CRT tellies going fairly regularly on there.

I'd reply 'ah ok sorry I must have misunderstood I thought you were interested in buying it, no worries'

Point her to free cycle?

I just wouldn't reply unless she offers the full asking price. She seems to have no shame and so will continue to push her luck, she is trying to wear you down.

My dad died a few weeks after buying a mobility scooter which he never got the chance to use.

We advertised it for mum on Gumtree for a very fair price (1/2 price for a brand new scooter). We received several long emails with details of peoples health issues, how not having a scooter was impacting them mentally, their loss of hope for the future etc etc and the final paragraph always asking for the scooter for next to nothing. First one was tough to read, when the second one came within minutes I then ignored the stories.

Keep your reply short and polite with what you want and ignore the stories as you don't know enough about other people lives to judge the truthfulness.

I advertised some worn once sky high heels on Gumtree, very nice but hellishly uncomfortable. Woman responded to ad, asked me to knock a fiver off which was fine. Remaining exchange was this

her: how can i get them then
me: i live in x town or can meet you in the high street of your town on wed
her: i av a newborn so not going out
me: ok, well I don't deliver
her: am scared of going out wit bab and av no childcare
me: well let me know if you sort something out
her: your a heartless bitch, i av a babby and you won't put yourself out
her: ignoring me now you stuck up fucking bitch I need them for a party next week
her: am reporting you you COW
me: thought you were scared to go out and had no child care
her: am gunna find you and smash your face in

Shock last time i advertised!

Op, I would just say politely 'no problem, sure check back with me when you get paid and I will let you know then if its still available'

MissDuke, it was downright odd! DH and myself were open mouthed at it. She admitted they were for a party but the extreme responses were bizarre

I bought a buzz lightyear for my DD from a Facebook selling page but DP went to meet him for it. The guy kept mailing me asking how did buzz sleep, was he settling in etc. Then said he had lots of women's clothes to sell and what size was I, foolishly I told him and he said "I bet you have a nice big arse" then sent me a picture of the skimpiest little Ann Summers thing with nipple tassels Shock Blocked him immediately after that!

Anyone that tells a stranger a sob story to get a non essential 'treat' item cheaper, is doing it for them and lying their arses off.

Nah. I had a bad experience on gumtree trying to sell my car. As in people kept telling me fucking sob stories and I lost sleep over it. I just wanted to try on 'asshole' for size.
