To think I'm NOT a fussy eater?

I used to be a terribly fussy eater.

I don't think I am any more. DP and his family roll eyes and think I'm dreadfully fussy. I wouldn't describe myself as a fussy eater at all (maybe because I'm comparing to how I used to be). What do you think?

I don't eat
sprouts (I like every other veg)
custard
big lumps of offal (so no to plate of fried kidneys but can eat a few in steak and kidney pie, no to actual liver but like pate, no to hearts, tripe, other wobbly bits)
shellfish/seafood. (I eat normal fish but not anything in a shell/prawns/squid.)

I also don't like red wine or beer.

Is this enough to make me a 'fussy eater'?
Where do you draw the line?

Doesn't seem massively fussy to me. My family always say that I'll eat anything, but I also don't eat sprouts, big lumps of offal and prawns.

No, I don't think that makes you a fussy eater at all, those are perfectly acceptable likes/dislikes imo.

Not fussy at all by the sounds!

Doesn't sound fussy to me, but old reputations are hard to shake off, IME.

They are the foodstuffs I don't eat either plus parsnips, shellfish because Im allergic, and I don't think I'm fussy at all. Neither do my family.

oh hang on, I forgot salads and fruit.

I like salad and fruit apart from cucumber, radish, beetroot and mango.

Am I back in the fussy category now?

That's not too fussy at all.

No not at all. I also used to be a fussy eater and feel I am still treated with that brush. My list is like this:

  • no almonds or its related products because they're the work of the devil
  • no big lumps of offal (but i adore haggis and black pudding)
  • no mushrooms

And that's it!

I'm fussier than you!

I don't like gravy or tomato sauce. That apparently makes me super fussy and weird

Doesn't sound massively fussy to me. Some of the items on your list are not anything I'd choose to eat either.

However, some people are always quick to claim fussiness and my former ILs were like this. The very few things I genuinely disliked were always replaced with a deep sigh and a great deal of fuss when actually, I'd have been quite happy to eat whatever the rest of the meal was. The worst occasion was when they replaced braised kidneys with a tin of pilchards on toast.

I guess it all depends on just how fussy you used to be because as a pp has said, old reputations can be hard to shake off. Eye rolling and the like does nothing to help though.

You sound about as fussy as me, and I don't consider myself a fussy eater.

You sound similar to me OP, and I get called a fussy eater all the time! I have foods that I dislike that I'll still eat, but my absolute no-no list is:

-- shellfish and seafood (exception to this is cod, in fish fingers or from the chippy)
-- brussel sprouts
-- onions
-- tomato (passata is fine, but not chunks)
-- offal in any way, shape, or form
-- mayonnaise

I'll eat anything else, but apparently I'm very fussy... Probably because almost every supermarket sandwich has tomato or mayo in it, and because so many dishes have onion in it. I don't think my list is a long one, though.

Still not fussy, imo!

My BiL is a fussy eater. For example he won't eat beef except in a steak pie or burger, says he doesn't like pork but will eat sliced ham (only if a certain thickness and plain), bacon and sausages, won't eat chicken or anything with chicken stock, mashed potato has to have lumps, absolutely no onions or garlic, only vegetable he will eat is carrots and they have to be sliced in to discs and no other shape, won't eat gravy or any sauce, won't eat "foreign muck" (ie. anything I cook) and the list goes on and on and on. There have been occasions where he has refused entire meals for some reason or other and sat and sulked at the table while everyone else enjoyed their food. I try hard to cook things he will like when he visits but it is practically impossible!

Winterbells · 20/11/2014 13:01

Er, sorry for the rant! Can you tell BiL is visiting soon and I am not looking forward to cooking for him?

I know someone who doesn't like cheese, tomato, sauces, spices, bread, soup, juices. She doesn't do sweet food, creams or cake because she is quite health concious. Will question me on where my vegetables and meat are sourced from and she wonders why I dread her weekly suggestions of going out for lunch. Where does she think we can eat?!
So, no, I don't think you're being fussy!

sounds fussy to me - sorry..

Fussiness comes from stuff like the "no lumps of offal" - but will eat it in its unrecognisable forms - like in pies and pates..

(I don't eat blue cheese because it makes me puke)

we all have foods we dont like mine are

bell peppers , sweetcorn, shell fish, raw tomatoes except cherry ones, bananas, oranges, burgers of any sort, sausages, so does that make me fussy

ShockingBadHat · 20/11/2014 13:08

Definitely fussy.

I eat anything except cooked mince beef though so what do I know.

yes I can see that point. Maybe I should work on that.

Winter give him nothing but mashed potato all visit! Then smile sweetly when he protests and say "well I knew you wouldn't like the beef stew, gravy, and quarter-chopped carrots that we all have with ours, and there's definitely no foreign muck, onion, chicken or garlic in it" Grin

I would characterise a fussy eater as one who ends up with a restricted diet. Your diet doesn't sound at all restrictive.

Report
olaflikeswarmhugs · 20/11/2014 13:12

That is definitely not fussiness !! You can dislike some foods without being fussy !

I dislike about twice the amount of food than that and I wouldn't consider myself a fussy eater (although like you I really used to be!)

I don't like and won't eat

Sprouts in any form
Cauliflower florets
Broccoli florets but I like the stems
Tabasco
Mushrooms
Raw onions
Coriander in any form
Offal
Lobster
Salmon
Salami or pepperoni
Nuts
And probably loads more. I still don't think of myself as fussy

Guess I'm fussy, then. Grin I love pate but will not eat offal otherwise.

Also don't eat mushrooms, blue cheese, apricots or game. Or spicy hot things.

Report

I probably have a longer list than you but I don't consider myself fussy. Surely everyone has some foods that they don't like?

I don't like seafood/shellfish (except crab) either as I cant get past the smell and texture of any of them. But saying that I don't think ive actually tasted many so that could be construed as fussy I guess. Even though ive vomited in the past trying to get a prawn in my mouth to 'just try it'.

Winterbells DH wont eat pork (as in a joint of pork, chops etc) but will eat ham, bacon and sausages too. Makes no sense to me either but he really doesn't like it. Ive tried to disguise it as chicken in the past and still couldn't get him to eat it!
