AIBU?

To ask does this diet sound healthy?

Yesterday, average day, I ate:

Breakfast: granola with no added sugar or dried fruit, with light soya milk. About 150ml orange juice.

Lunch: A tuna and coleslaw sandwich on spelt bread.

Dinner: A 3 egg omelette with an onion, 4 big mushrooms, and cheese. Handful of cherry tomatoes waiting for it to cook.

Before bed: A banana and a pumpkin seed bar.

What nutrients or food groups am I missing? Am I making any big mistakes?

YABU to shoe horn this into AIBU.

Why? I am asking AIBU because I am seriously muddled at the amount of conflicting advice I read about what is healthy and what isn't. Here, I'll get realistic responses at least.

Buy a bag of chips and get over yourself.

Fine but needs more veg- have an apple instead of orange juice, lots of salad with lunch and some veg with dinner

My fitness pal is quite good for giving a very rough guide to nutrition. I think you only have 4 of your 5 a day?

'What food groups am I missing? Am I making any big mistakes?'

...are not AIBU questions.

You know your diet is healthy.

And what Saucy said! Chips would have gone well with the omlette.

foodsteronahealthkick · 01/11/2014 12:16

Thanks, Tanaqui. I can't really face much veg though, I feel I'm doing well with my mushrooms and onions! would live on cheese basically if I let myself Grin

It's not so much I don't like veg or salad it's all the bloody chopping and prep and cooking more than one thing. Think i may have to suck it up and get into a routine of making salads to go with everything.

Smellycandles, I just don't know why you're so bothered about it?? I have explained. I have said - I feel sometimes like my diet's good, then read shit and feel very uncertain, hence wondering if I am in fact being unreasonable to relax and sit on my laurels.

Congrats to you that you are so fecking confident in your diet that you don't worry about it. I worry about mine on and off, it's a big worry for me at times.

More veg. Especially green leafy veg. And something orange or yellow.
Like someone upthread said, salad with lunch.

Not much in way of healthy fat there either - cheese & coleslaw not very. Bit of oily salad dressing would do it. You don't need a lot.

And given yesterday was Halloween, I think you underdid the sweets and choc...

And why eat so much just before bed?

Ooh, that sounded awfully negative though, it was healthier than about 97% of the population...

Horace - so the spinach goes in just before you finish the omelette? I don't fold mine so not sure at what point you mean to add it?

Sounds fine to me. You're probably better off examining your intake over a week though.

I hate granola without dried fruit. I think a handful of dried fruit is fine. But, personal taste and all that.

Thanks, Aimey. Yeah, ate later on after dinner as was up late trying to get something done, dinner was about 8 and banana/ seed bar was about 1am.

However, I'm the opposite of you, I dislike the taste and texture of dried fruit!

I'm worried that you are missing out on wine, coffee and chocolate - all high in vital antioxidants :)

There's no need to obsess over food. Just eat as much variety as possible, plenty of veg, some fruit and as little as possible processed food. Cut out (or reduce) all the obvious crap - sweets, crisps, etc.
You will be healthy if you eat that way ,unless you have an underlying medical condition.

Bauhausfan, no need to worry - I am a tea monster, and just about to make myself a coffee, drink a fair few cups a week just don't feel like it every day! Wasn't even considering caffeine as a bad thing tbh.

Don't drink at the minute as have just started antidepressants but chocolate, actually more like salted caramel ice cream, will no doubt factor when my pmt kicks into gear next week...

You sound unhealthy obsessed. Apart from that hard to tell from one day! Need to look over a few days or a week to get a good picture of what you're missing (if anything).

As others have said is maybe add in some more veg but I really like veg and find that an easy thing to do.

I agree about adding more fresh fruit and veg, but I am newly vegan so am obsessed with that! So i would add fresh chopped fruit with the granola. I also agree to huge handfuls of spinach in the sandwich. You could have a green salad with the omelette, or sauteed green dwarf beans. Mmmm.

I am trying to have breakfast, lunch and dinner each with three serves of different fruit or veg. Because I did a review several weeks ago and realised that I thought I was quite healthy, but some days had no fresh veg except for potatos.

Whois, yeah I am probably a bit obsessed. I used to have an eating disorder. In recovery for 10 years. Now depressed and anxious to avoid falling into a bad relationship with food again, and I know myself well enough to know that if I feel I'm eating healthily, giving my body the best stuff it can get to fight against depression, then I feel I am 'winning' and will be motivated to keep doing that instead of restricting.

I think it sounds pretty good. Life's too short to be measuring out exact recommended daily allowances of everything, some days you'll eat more fruit and veg, some days more protein, and so on. so long as it balances out it's fine.

Overall it sounds very low-ish on the glycaemic index apart from the banana, low in highly processed foods, low-ish in simple/refined carbs (although not low in cabs overall) and pretty balanced. If you were not actively trying to lose weight but just maintaining a healthy weight I imagine you'd do just fine on a diet like that, with no glaring errors, although some leafy greens would have been nice - spinach salad or spinach in the omelette?

You have potassium and lots of vitamin B6 in the banana, vitamin C in the orange juice, protein, fat and selenium in the eggs, protein and omega fats in the tuna, protein and calcium in the cheese, complex carbs in the spelt and the granola, lycopene and vitamin C in the tomatoes, essential fatty acids in the pumpkin seeds, all looks pretty good to me.

You need more vegetables. Less orange juice. I'm personally not a fan of soya milk.

How about egg for breakfast?

More veg/salad at lunch and dinner. Also, I would be starving - wouldn't be enough for me. I would add in potato, carrot, spinach alongside the omelette.
