..cleaned my oven. I recently confessed this to a friend who is hardly a domestic goddess herself and she nearly fell off her chair. But the oven doesn't look that dirty and any germs must be killed off by the heat, so why bother?

NB I do keep the oven door clean & shiny to lull visitors into a false sense of bio-security Wink.

I never clean mine either...I'd rather buy a new one plus I don't clean anything that is hidden from visitors.

YANBU.

I've had my oven for 6 years now and cleaned it once. It didn't look any better, so I now just clean the glass door and put the shelves in the dishwasher occasionally.

I cover food when I'm oven-cooking anyway so it doesn't get really dirty.

My mum often comes down with oven pride. That's the only time it gets cleaned.

I think it's quite a bad thing. A lady at work was horrified she hadn't cleaned her oven in three weeks. Shock

Me too. I make DH do it occasionally. Only after it's really smoking it he's cooked something super fatty like duck.

I don't understand how the chemicals don't get into your food.

YANBU. I cleaned my oven yesterday and I've done my knee in! You've also made me feel like a domestic goddess when I am clearly not as SIL won't let her daughter come and stay in my house (am assuming because of cleanliness issues - but that's a WHOLE other thread).

To be fair, my old oven was self cleaning and a lot better. This one requires a lot of Mr Muscle about once every 6 months and even that doesn't get it all off. Aren't your shelves really black?

I don't clean my oven either.

Once or twice DH has become overcome by the state of it and has gone 't into a cleaning frenzy. I don't stand in his way...

Me neither.

And like poster above, every time my mum comes to visit she makes a beeline to clean it. Finds chips cooked 40 times, take that Heston.

Sometimes a woman
Showroom clean oven once a year for £50

Good, old dh's. My dh's idea of a cleaning frenzy is to go around making PA comments about 'the state of the house'.

Cumbria, skivvy?

Ours self cleans, allegedly. I have never watched to see if it really does.

Will the special oven cleaning people come and clean your oven if it's in a really bad way? I mean like a REALLY bad way.

no, I never have, but I don't cook any meat so nothing that's going to spit fat around the inside. The bottom is probably a bit coated with pizza droppings though... Doesn't smell, though.

Can't remember the last time I cleaned ours. It's about 30 years old and a self-cleaning oven. I just wipe over the top when it needs it.

I do mine once a month with oven pride. The chemicals don't get in the food as they don't stay on, you wash them off!!

I clean the hob but never ever the oven - and we've had it 7 years. To be fair its only in the last few months I've thought it could do with it (but not actually done it so clearly isn't bothering me too much!)

I do mine if we're going on holiday and someone else is house sitting...

Self-cleaning ovens usually need to be told to self-clean i.e. put it on the Pyro setting.

As for "cleaning" ovens, I'm not a fan of using oven cleaning chemicals in the oven as I'm just a little nervous that they burn off lovely toxic chemicals into the oven and kitchen as I'm cooking.

The interior of a conventional oven must sterilise at over 100 degrees surely? The real reason for cleaning its guts must be to remove grease build up on the fan etc.

My oven is quite a mess. My sister has a feature on her's that's self-cleaning. It has this super-high temperature that burns everything off.

CombineBananaFister · 02/04/2014 20:50

Nope me neither, but in all fairness everything goes on a tray anyway so spillages go on that and that gets washed. the oven just needs a quick once over of the doors and cavity every now and then for splashes (no droppings) ??? Hopeful Grin ???
