I went quite when I can home I told. Dh and he said people do eat like this

Can this really be true no fruit and veg AT all won't you get skervey

I no there are people who eat a lot of oven food chicken nuggets ECt but this can't be true surely especially with children in the home

Well clearly it does happen otherwise there wouldn't be so many healthy eating initiatives etc.

It seems remarkable but I imagine it happens. But you only need minute quantities of vitamin C to avoid scurvy. So even a MacDonalds apple turnover once a month would probably do it. Or the small amounts contained in the ready meals. You really, really have to go some to get scurvy. It doesn't mean it's a healthy diet of course though.

But don't you get Scurvy if you have no fruit and veg at all

And what was she feeding her 2 year old then isn't that pretty much what toddlers eat along with cheese

I know a family like this, bizarrely the mother is vegetarian but the kids eat no fruit or veg at all and no dairy (milk or yogurts, I think they eat cheese but I'm not sure)

And this is a naice family, she cooks every night but the kids just aren't given fruit, veg or dairy as 'they won't eat it

I work with vulnerable children. Trust me, some of them would KILL for a diet like that.

I know people who have no cooking facilities and send their DCs for a £1 bag of chips for their tea every single evening. The children don't get fed at home, they rely on the school (breakfast club, free school meals) to provide them with nutrition. Some go to school on Monday morning having had little or nothing to eat all weekend. I dread the school holidays on their behalf, it's heartbreaking.

we basically only buy frozen veg, its actually fresher than fresh

thecatneuterer · 28/03/2014 15:26

Fusedog as I said the amount of vitamin C need to ward of scurvy is tiny. There will be enough in the very occasional ready meal for that. After all there is normally some sort of tomato or onion ingredient in ready meals. Just because they're not getting scurvy doesn't make it OK of course though.

It does happen but please don't be so judgey. The price of fresh fruit or veg from our local stores co-op and tesco are scandalous.

I've complained about it in store. It's cheaper to buy ready meals than buy fresh in. A steak pie from farm food £1 to make it from scratch your looking at £5 at the cheapest.

Bag of frozen chips £1 but a bag of potatoes £2.15. £1.75 fir a fuckng broccoli head!!! Gives me the fucking rage!!!!!!

Luckily for us we have a car and can travel to a cheap market where we buy our fresh veg/fruit a hell of a lot cheaper. Fish and meat too.

If we didn't have a car we would be fucked. This government wants to sort it's shit out and stop letting these bastards charge these prices and stop squawking about rise in obesity !

op you are very lucky you don't have to worry about food, it's not the case for every one else.

Take your judgey pants of please !

You seem to be very sheltered. Are you generally shocked by this? There are many people who cannot to afford to eat fruits and veg, what do you say to that?

Sorry but you have no idea what my income is we spend £60 a week on shopping for 4 people one baby and one teen including nappies and it's not £5 to make a pie

Pastry tesco flour and butter
Most people have butter and flour in there stores
You only need a small amount of chicken loads or mushrooms which are dirt cheap and and a tin of condensed chicken soup

I can make a large pie for £3 and had enough leftovers of baby's lunch and mine the next day.

Every one in London which is were I live has a black or Asian population and the ethnic supermarkets sell 1kg or potatoes for £1.20

We don't live in the sticks and you can't move for asda or a morrisons there are 3 markets in our area all of which have a fruit and veg stalls oh and the markets are 3 times a week

I never touched veg as a kid even though I love it now...always loved fruit though.

Surely you can't be that shocked by what she told you OP?

Oh and btw the lady in question spends £145 a week on shopping there are 6 of them I spend 60-70 for 4 people

That's why I can't understand she spends all that money on

Then don't try to understand it, I'm sure she doesn't care Confused

For all you know, her kids might drink juice/smoothies and take vitimins.

In fact your assumption that all kids love strawberrys pisses me off tbh.

Strawberrys are a fuckng luxury where i was brought up. If your count g pennies to buy a loaf, you not going to be thinking "ooooh should I get some strawberrys instead....maybe tesco finest! May even treat myself to Madagascan vanilla infused cream to go with it!!!! Hmm

Fusedog · 28/03/2014 15:42

Isn't veg pretty much the 3rd component to any meal

And I really can't understand fruit I never met a child who didn't like fruit

Seriously find something important to be shocked about. What she spends and feeds her family has nothing to do with you.
