to be dreading the world cup?

I used to enjoy watching England it down the pub with friends, I used to follow my own team, had a general interest in football and what was going on. Not a top hobby/interest of mine but I liked to know. But now, two kids down the line, it is one interest that had to fall by the wayside. I find it boring, its all about the money and egos of the millionaire owners and players. DP says he feels hoodwinked as I came across as a pint drinking lass who liked football. I tell him I have too much to do and other hobbies I have no time for.

DP loves football, loves his own team, but will listen to anything about football at all. He listens to the radio as much as possible. This has been increasing over the years to the extent we listen to football radio on the way to days out, and now, last few days, when getting the kids ready for bed, he has started to listen to football while we get the kids ready for bed. It drives me up the wall. He tells me all about who is where in the table, about players and what they are up to, scores, cups, managers etczzzzz. I couldn't give a toss. I just don't care. At weekends, I'll try turning the radio to another station and he gets irritated and I tell him how would he fancy Jane Austen on the radio all the time?

I just seen the world cup goes on for a whole month. The build up will be fever pitch and then the football will be disappointing. I am dreading it being on the radio and tv all the time. Please tell me I am not alone.

I'm dreading it too. Tedious beyond belief.

I love football but hate the World Cup!
I love my own team by really can't stand the World Cup because it takes over normal television programmes and forces people to hear about it and I hate that. I always hear about the X factor or some crap, for example, and I shouldn't have to because I don't watch it, I hate that sort of forced to know rubbish.
Also, can't really stand many of England's players!

Oh fuck noooo. DH plays football 3 times a week (twice in one day!) and watches it on every fecking channel he can find. Whenever there's a big game on his mate comes through for the night and he regresses back about 20 years...plus he constantly tries to get me involved and interested in footie, bless him. But no. Dear God, no.

I hate football; it's boring. OH loves football. I don't mind how much he watches on TV as I go off and do my own thing (antisocial creature that I am) whether it's reading, watching a film he wouldn't like, studying, or just laying in the bath with a magazine.

He doesn't insist on talking about it all the time though, or listening to it on the radio. It's a time we do things separately. This is your real problem. Not that OH loves football - he's trying to insist you have to love it too. that's not right.

Like you I cared a hell of a lot more back in the day. Our twins are the direct result of a mahoosive contraceptive failure while celebrating England winning 3-0 in the quarter final stage of the 1998 World Cup Blush

But your DP really is pushing it to the giddy limit! Footie talk is not appropriate during baby bedtime.

If he didn't push it so hard, you might have ended up with the happy medium we've got now. Yes, he's downstairs with a mate right now, with Chelsea v Galatasaray. We've dealt with child related stuff, the twins are fed and very happily watching The Simpsons, and I'm very happily MNetting.

But later, the girls will be in bed and he and I will be perfectly happy catching up with The Musketeers, which he likes almost as much as the average MNetter.

Depending on ko times in Brazil the matches will be broadcast here in the evening or much later, as in 11.00 pm at night, what a nightmare. ! Yoy will avoid some of it Wink

I love football, it's a huge part of our family life but I get how it can really piss off others.

Your dh does sound rather obsessed though, why does he think you ' hoodwinked him'?

I hate football but don't mind world cups as they happen to clash with long summer evenings and weekend days at the allotment and with my DAB radio I shall be listening to Marc Riley most evenings whilst I am there. Bliss.

And when there is a big match on I get the house to myself when the OH goes to watch it with his chums. Double bubble.

I hate football. Dp hates football so I won't have the hell of being subjected to the World Cup, BUT my dp is obsessed with rugby and I've just had six nations overload.

He lives and breaths rugby and seems to think I share this interest.

Sounds like my dh!
I was the same, liked it when younger and even played for a while. Dh watching tonights match and Im on here Smile
Three kids and new interests mean I dont follow it as much. Dcs dont play and have limited interest in the sport which Im happy with because the role models are not setting an example Im happy with.
He can watch the world cup as much as he likes when its on. Every four years isnt much and it means I will have some time to myself.

It will be very boring. Luckily DH has no interest in football.
The saddest thing is that incidents of domestic violence will rise sharply.

Agreed. I also used to like it but now find it all overhyped and inevitably disappointing in big tournaments. I am not looking forward to the whole country getting worked up for nothing. Plus it means The Apprentice is not going to be screened now till the autumn Angry

Can't he listen to the radio on headphones at the weekend so the rest of you get a break?

MamaPain · 18/03/2014 20:48

YANBU if you hate it, however, my DH and DSs are exactly the same and I've grown to like it.

DH is intending on going to Brazil, obviously he'll be back sharpish as we won't do well at all.

The way I make these tournaments work for us, is I arrange with the rest of the family to host related parties. I've already said first match will be a BBQ at ours. It means all the football fanatics have someone who gives a shit to talk to until they're bored of it and I get to chat about a ore interesting topic.

Report
cerealqueen · 18/03/2014 20:50

Not just me then, phew. He doesn't actually go to any matches, unlike some people I know, but that would be easier, as he'd get it out of his system maybe.

He doesn't talk football at kids bedtime, it just there, in the background, the drivelling chat.

He thinks I hoodwinked him because when we met I used to watch it in the pub with my brother with a pint. We are talking ten years ago though! If England had even a vague chance maybe I could try and get up some enthusiasm, but they will win one, draw one, lose 2 and go out on penalties.

Oh God is the World Cup on soon? It can't be time for another one already can it?

I was relieved that the six nations thing just finished, don't tell me there's another sport thing to contend with?!

MamaPain · 18/03/2014 21:07

Why on earth doesn't he go to the matches? Dh rarely misses a game and treks all over the world to watch his beloved Spurs lose play. He goes with his mates and they talk about it and ok there is a constant murmur of football in the house as he will just as happily watch or listen to some obscure African village team but at least he talks to his mates about the majority of it rather than me.

Whats his team, can you get him a season?

I loathe football but fortunately DH isn't much interested either. He'll probably watch the final but that's about it.

This is why I married a man who hates sport - well apart from F1 but that is a lot less full on.

I grew up in a footy obsessed household. Does my head in. Watch a match fine but don't keep fucking talking about it and watching a load of morons on TV who are too old to play anymore (or too crap) but can talk about it for hours like it is interesting. It isn't.

I love football we are very much a football family either DS or DP is playing/training or we are going to/watching football so I can't wait but Yanbu I felt the same about the Olympics last year had very little interest in it but I just felt as though it's all I heard about and it was on tv 24/7 it's definitely not fun when most of the world are interested in something you aren't.

My DH and DS are rugby fanatics so we've had non stop rugby talk for the last few weeks - quite honestly it doesn't bother me at all, more time to mumsnet Grin or just do my own thing. I can quite easily disengage from it all and I would rather have sport related activities than computer games going on Grin.

Ragwort · 18/03/2014 21:19

I have no doubt that my DH is totally bored by my hobbies and interests so it seems totally selfish to complain about what they like doing.

I'm also dreading it. We don't even have a team in (I'm Scottish!!) but ds is a massive Leo Messi fan and will follow Argentina all the way. I don't mind that too much, ds is 12 and you can do a lot worse than Messi for a role model!!

I've embraced the darkness and entered into wagers with ds about the various outcomes. We've written down our choices (took him about an hour, took me 5 mins!) for the placings in the group stages, predictions for the semi finals and finals. Winner gets a nice cream off the other (though in practice this is going to be out of the box of cornettos in the freezer) and for the final result, we go OUT for ice cream, just me and him (he has 14 year old and 10 year old sisters).

Our predictions are sealed in a pile of enveloped initialled over the seam by us both and locked in the bureau. The finals will be predicted and witnessed before the match. I'm for Brazil, he's sure it'll be Germany! (As dh is half German, thus ds 1/4 German, he's being patriotic!)

I reckoned I could dread it and hate it, or just pitch in.

We've got the Commonwealth games all around us this summer - real sporty summer here!

Are you sure you didn't dream having your kids? Because England certainly didn't make the semis with a 3-0 win.

If I remember right, they beat Tunisia and Columbia 2-0 each in the group, and lost 2-1 to Romania. They then went out to Argentina on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Hmmm, weegiemum maybe you have the right approach, if I can bring myself to take enough of an interest!

I grew up in a football mad household: my mum and dad and their families are all massive fans. We had football in the car on days out and whenever it was on TV or radio.

I love football and am really looking forward to the World Cup. A whole month of summer football: can't wait!

After all: it's only once every four years.
