AIBU?

To let my 15 week old baby take all naps on me or in pram ?

She will only sleep in pram being pushed around, or on me after a few mins of rocking. Can't put her down as she wakes and then is wide awake, doesn't settle herself well as when I lay her down she appears awake again even if starting to look sleepy!
When would be reasonable to think she might grow out of this or do I need to give her a bigger helping hand?

dD was exactly the same, in fact now at 18mo she can still be like that. She did start letting me put her down on a mat once she was already asleep at about four months but went off that idea when she hit one. She now mainly naps in the car or the buggy while we're out and about. Or if we're at home on the sofa after having cuddled close to me to fall asleep and I then contort myself to get away without waking her!

Enjoy the snuggles! I loved the excuse to put my feet up Grin

Mine didn't nap in a cot until 6 months. He'd fall asleep on the breast and then eyes would ping open the second he touched the mattress. He grew out of it on his own by six months and will now happily nap up to two and a half hours in the cot. Enjoy the cuddles!

I'm living in hope that my ds will grow out of exact same situation. Won't sleep in Moses basket or cradle. Will only sleep in his papoose, on my chest or in my bed if I am there. This is my 4th and all my skills I had with my other 3 in getting them to sleep are no good with this little monkey.. nightmare!!

Perfectly fine, enjoy the snoozy baby cuddles. My DD was/is like this (now 12mths). I was v worried about the transition to naps at nursery, but as it happens she sleeps really well on a mat at nursery but still won't be put down when at home. I love it, I miss her so much when I'm at work, I could sit there all day with her asleep on me when I get the chance!

My 11 week old DD is like that too. Thank god for iPhones and iPads. I sometimes rock her in the pram in the kitchen with the cooker hood on. She seems to like the white noise and I can just leave her in the pram if I need to get stuff done. With my DS I started at around 16 weeks to put him down in the cot in a dark room. I did a lot of shush pat and PUPD but I am not sure if I can be bothered with all that effort this time around especially since we are always out and about..

I think at that age mine just loved being rocked in the pram. It was a gradual thing that I moved them to the cot for daytime naps, although I did use it.

Just do what works for you and your baby. The pram can be conveneint if you want to rock them without actually holding them yourself.

LittleElf is 16 months old, all naps were on me or in the pram/buggy for at least 4-5 months, and then I rocked her to sleep until 8-9 months. She goes down so well now by herself. We stay outside her room before she falls asleep but only because she likes to throw her dummies then cry for them.

DD never napped in her cot. She did nap in a cot and later on a mat at nursery (no idea how). As long as you don't mind then it isn't a problem. She doesn't nap any more, but does fall asleep on me every few months. I always think it will be the last time, so I love it. She did it yesterday and I just played on my phone for a couple of hours until DH came home to carry her to bed.

My DD was the same. She is 2.9 now and until she was 2 never had a daytime nap anywhere other than in the pram, on me or in the car. At 2 and 2 days, she decided naps were for wimps and gave them up Grin

Do you feed her to sleep? This was the other thing, I fed her to sleep (at night) until 19months and after I stopped feeding her to sleep in the day (around 11 months, with a struggle), I rocked her in the pram. The alternative was a grizzly but awake and overtired child.

Some children are like that. I'd like to say given my time again I would do it different, but the girl was so skilled in waking herself up/staying awake that I'm not sure what I could've done differently, assuming my aim is for both of us to be happy and functional. I wish I could have put her in the cot and her drift off eventually like other babies I know.

The only thing I would've done differently is stop feeding her to sleep maybe a couple of months earlier because it actually became a source of massive frustration for both of us. She wakes at 7.30 and goes happily to sleep in her cot around 8 (with me in the room, though this is not essential I don't think, I'm just soft).

Honestly, do what your baby needs and what works best for you both. Give her the chance to go on her own, maybe introduce a comfort toy (buy several the same!), and hope she gets better at it as she gets older but be prepared for her not to! Good luck x

Mine were/are the same. They have almost never napped in the cot, so have used either slings or pushchairs, or the car if we are driving a long distance. DD is 14mo and has her nap in the pushchair every day, which means she can have her nap in the garden if the weather is fine.

My 1 year old ds very rarely naps in his cot. Most are inhis pram. For the first 6 months pretty much all his naps were on me or dh. I loved it

ah lovely op. my ds1 was just like this and it was bloody lovely.

unfortunately ds2 hated cuddles, seriously would not be rocked. we had to take his travel cot to the beach for him to sleep.

dd3 and 4 were cuddlemisters. bloody enjoy.

btw ds2 is a huggy 6'2'' lovely lad now. Grin

YANBU. Do what works for you.

Ignore naysayers and rod-for-your-own-backers, ignore especially smug ones.

DD was like this, she'll now fall asleep next to me on our bed but will not, for the love of god, go in her cot. She's 10months now.

My Dd was like this. Now I can't remember the last time she napped on me- I think it was around 9 months old (she's 17 months now). I miss the sleepy cuddles, plus it's harder to get her to sleep (and stay asleep) when we're out and about now.

I say do whatever suits you and your baby. You can't spoil tiny babies. I held all mine when asleep and they all sleep brilliantly now.
After a recent MMC I would ask you to enjoy those sleepy cuddles. They are precious .

My DS (12 months) didn't do daytime naps in his cot until he was about 6/7 months. I still take him out in the car on the days I'm not working to get him to sleep in the morning. If he struggles in the afternoon I put him in his grobag next to me on my bed, and he's usually out within minutes.

He rarely naps in his pram though, too much to see. I usually have to walk at least an hour for any chance of him napping in his pram! And the moment I walk in the drive his eyes are WIDE open!

I cuddle my 16 week old ds while he sleeps in the day - I love it!

He sleeps great in his cot from 7pm and self settles at night but daytimes are for mummy cuddles Smile

Thanks everyone, you know what? Your right, enjoy it! I love that she loves to sleep on me, I never get anything done but I'm gonna say sod it!
Only problem I have to work out now is what to do if I need the loo!

To get round the loo dilemma you could

  • buy a sling and get her to nap in that, you can then go to the loo to your heart's content
  • wear a skirt and no knickers so you can carry sleeping baby in one arm and hitch up your skirt with your free hand to use the toilet
  • get practicing your pelvic floor exercises and wait till she wakes

I'm so grateful I quickly evolved a cast iron bladder. Even then, there's a point when your need becomes greater than your baby's and you've just got to put them down and go. Gently, gently and if they stay asleep great, but if not, tell them you'll be right back and go. Baby might cry but will be fine, it's really ok. x
