She's only twelve, 13 in a couple of months, but good grief the hysteria is wearing. This member of the group is 'going out' with this member for three days, this one won't speak to the other one because she's 'going out' with her 'ex'. Then this evening one of them was 'trying to commit suicide'. I'm, of course, deeply concerned when told this.

Turns out she was just showing off on a particularly high climbing frame. Cue lots of back and forth text messages declaring 'you're my best friend ever and I cried for hours'.

If I was ever like this, mother, you have my unending apologies. I'm so bored of it - I'd never tell her, but golly it's dull. AIBU? Should I be a achingly sympathetic angel-mother?

IMO they start being able to have normal reactions to events about 17/18.

Today dd was telling me she was off abroad with her mates this summer, New York , Las Vegas, huge road trip - obviously no chance of this whatsoever at 15 - so I hmm--hmmed a lot and pointed her in the direction of her maths homework.

endless crap is so on the mark. My eyes glaze over when she starts talking. Which is horrid, I want to be a good listener. But I've reached my drama limit.

runninginflipflops Yesterday my 2 year old ran into her room and slammed the door, sobbing loudly for no reason. Stupidly, I stood outside coaxing, 'Would you like a biscuit?'. Thought she'd come running out. Instead, the door opened a crack and a hand squeezed through. It's beginning.

my 17 year old is frankly driving me nuts. anything we ask her to do results in an argument. tiring. she seems gloomy and fed up most of the time, up until one of her friends turns up. like a switch has been flicked. all smiles and conversation. makes me depressed. sigh. good to read a thread about teenagers.

DH asked DS2(17) to tidy his room yesterday. He couldn't possibly do it, he had too much homework, he ranted.

Today, we went shopping and came back to the bed completely changed, the blind open and the windows open airing the room. He had a bowl of water and some cleaner and was cleaning every surface, all his clothes are away and the floor has been hoovered!

I stood like this , he said "I like to do things in my own time mum!"

Tomorrow it will be back to normal!

I was sick of teen dramas when I was a teen, as is DD1(16) neither of us have any patience with them at all.

DD2(just 13) is far more one of the crowd, but even so even she seems to be getting tired of it after a couple of very short lived BFs and avoiding the fall out from others "relationships"

And of course today was high school places allocated, and each of the gang is going to a different high school so "Waaah! We're never going to see each other again!!"

Oh yes they will. DD2(13) is having a sleep over with her primary school partner in crime tonight.

They may have gone to different schools, but they carried on doing the same extra curricular club for a bit and they still ring each other, text and meet up.

DD18 sings tunefully, cooks deliciously, and two days cleaned the bathroom in exchange for friends staying over.

And then: "IF YOU WEE ON THE TOILET SEAT AGAIN I WILL RIP OUT YOUR SPINE FOR SOUP".

It's like having my Mum back, right down to the PMT-fuelled hyperviolence.
