AIBU to be agreeing with Sinead O'Connor

Perhaps ye have seen the media frenzy around Sinead O'Connor's open letters to Miley Cyrus?
www.sineadoconnor.com/2013/10/4th-open-letter-to-miley-cyrus/

Personally, I would have phrased it differently, but I do think Sinead was
trying to reach a young female audience, trying to highlight a major issue
in contemporary media, using the fact that Miley named her as an influence to try to highlight the issue of not needing to take your clothes off to sell records, and to also highlight how damaging these images / attitudes are to young women.
I admire Sinead for talking so openly and frankly about mental illness, and for scolding brat Miley for sneering at it. I have always admired Sinead, even if I didn't always agree with her.
Some people think she is madder than a bag of wasps & dimiss her, but I think she has made some relevant points, & has tried to use her fame to spread a good message for girls.
I have watched a few Sinead interviews and vids with my DS to tell her about Sinead, because she was playing Wrecking Ball parody vids and wrecking my head.
Sinead might have tatooed B and Q on her cheeks but Sinead is Sinead, she does this stuff, and is always 100% into whatever it is she's into at the time. She would be a good MNer, because she likes swear words, and I think she has smashed cakes in some of her videos. She ripped the Popes picture up too.
I don't usually jump on media hyped up crap, but I think Sinead is raising some huge issues at a time when there is a tide of irrelevant superficial crap in pop music and popular culture.
Does anyone else feel that they support Sinead in this?

I think Miley Cyrus behaved very immaturely in response to those letters. Fine, she didn't like them. She could have said nothing though, or just said I appreciate your concern but I'm fine actually thanks.

Sinead O'Connor has certainly had her problems but that doesn't mean her opinions are invalid or she deserves to be publicly mocked by Miley Cyrus.

She appears to be suffering from some kind of arrested development. She might be 20 but her behaviour and attitude seem more akin to a troubled 13 year old. I feel sorry for her.

Miley Cyrus is a fool.

This is so much better than Wrecking Ball!

I must confess ~I felt a tear just now watching it Blush
She conveys the emotion so well. I don't understand how breaking up with somebody would make you want to lick a hammer and lie naked on rubble ...
Hopefully Sineads letter has reached a whole young audience and caused them to question things, or given them the courage and tools to speak out against the relentless sexualisation of young women through music and popular media.
I have a 12 yr DS, I am so glad she laughs at Miley. I have worked very hard to make sure her life is not full of unquestioned sexist and sizeist images.

The thing that shocks me the most is sinead stating she had received numerous messages telling her to commit suicide.

I find that absolutely appalling. Surely those individuals should be traced and charged with criminal conduct.

I don't know the background to this but sinead strikes me as a brave and dignified woman.

BakedAlaskaStomper · 13/10/2013 17:34

Yes, she is brave.
In a nutshell, Miley, in a Rolling Stones interview, said that Sinead was her inspiration for her hairstyle and Wrecking Ball video (??!!)
So Sinead penned this open letter
www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/03/sinead-o-connor-open-letter-miley-cyrus
basically saying the music industry was pimping her, that her nudity and over-sexualised behaviour is a bad message to be sending to her young female fans, that the industry would chew her up and spit her out. She also said that she chose her look as the anthesis of what the industry wanted her to be, and was glad she hadn't pimped out, because she is still relevant.
Miley responded with abuse; she tweeted an image of Sinead ripping up a picture of the pope, and a screenshot of some 2year old tweets where Sinead was seeking help from a psychiatrist. She also referred to her as crazy on TV, and also included Amanda Bynes ( a child star of similar age to Miley who was recently hospitalised for mental health issues).
Basically, Miley behaved like a spoilt skank bully.

Gosh, I'm so bored with this Miley stuff now. All the What a heroine Sinead O'Connor is to slut-shame a 20 year old girl, and make her feel she's responsible for the breakdown of society and the victimisation of women in the music industry because your DD used to watch her on telly. I think she's been picked over enough now. Just let her get on with her life, and give us all a break.

Miley is a know it all 20 yr old though a silly girl really who has had too much too soon and has a gob on her

I agree with sinaed good on her all she is doing is trying to tell Miley to chill out put the tongue awaya nd concentrate on her singing Miley was rude and obnoxious back ,

Sinead now needs to STFU about it.

She was patronising.

Miley really hasn't done anything many people haven't already done. Why focus on her? Look at the video for blurred lines, Brittany in her little school uniform, Beyonce and her wiggly arse. Madonna anyone? Miley's performance wasn't good, she looked stupid but so what? she isn't the first and won't be the last.

The only thing that was shocking about it was the fact that she used to be a sweet Disney girl.

Miley is a young immature woman trying to find her way, let her get on with it. She will either grow out of it or she won't, shaming her is not going to help and I think it was stupid of Sinead to think it would.

Sinead publicly shamed her by 'slut shaming'.

I had a friend with bipolar who killed himself. So obviously I don't approve of Miley's initial response to Sinead. But she's just a kid and she probably doesn't know much about mental illness. She'll learn.

But really, there have been that many threads on this topic. When were the VMA awards? 25 August. I think the topic's been done to death now. Let's find a new Outrage Bus to get on.

She's 20, 2 years younger than myself and should most definitely know how to treat the issue of mental illness sensitively.

My unfortunate friend's 'friends' were in their late 30s/early 40s. Unfortunately they didn't know a thing about bipolar disorder, and it didn't even occur to them to look on the internet to find out.

Purlease. Mumsnet has had so many threads on The Miley Show already. How many more of them do we need.

Sinead is a very pure artist, raw and gutsy and intelligent.
Miley Cyrus is just an embarrassment. Her response to Sinead is very telling of her immaturity and shallowness.

Yeah well, it's less about Miley and more about Sinead - ''Thanks for saying these things so publicly"

I don't think Sinead needs to do this shit to sell concert tickets - Her audience will always come to see her. She has been accused of attention seeking before, but she always has a point - always.
Like I said I don't always agree with her - the priest thing certainly! I can see her point there, but I don't feel that it would change an organisation tha thas been misogynistic for about 1800 years. It's hard-wired into it.
I'll support Sinead even if I don't agree with everything she is saying, though in this case I do agree.

If Sinead O'Connor is really bothered perhaps she could contact her privately instead of writing all these open letters to her - I think they are both a pita with very little talent.

Miley Cyrus has just reached number one with one of the most staggering mediocre records of the 21st century. You wre -eh-ecked me for chrissakes?! How many people would ever have bothered watching the video to that one if she'd kept her knickers on?

She's hardly the naive little child Sinead is trying to make her out to be, and I find SOC's comments that she is mismanaging her own career to be misguided at best.

I think Miley knows exactly what she's doing, and more power to her if that's where she wants to go in life.
