AIBU?

To keep losing weight while pg

I had my DS exactly a year ago but have become unexpectedly pregnant again, i am 7 weeks now

I didn't manage to lose all my baby weight from DS, but had been starting to drop an lb or so a week in the last few months from eating more healthily and salsa classes. BMI was about 26 and now down to 24.5 or something (pre DS it was 22 ish)

I was really hoping to keep the weight loss up, as it's making me feel a lot better about myself, but is this feasible in my first trimester? And is it healthy? I know I'm not overweight but I still feel 'big' for me. Has anyone else done this? I don't intend to go crazy - I've been having three good-sized meals a day (cereal+fruit, soup and sandwich, spag bol) but avoiding snacks unless hungry and that is about it.

I would really like my weigt gain this time to be mostly bump not flab!

I hope i am not being rude, but have you got an eating disorder as 25 is normal range.

I think the guidance is not to diet bu I would assume that means not to restrict our calie intake unduly. If you eat a healthy balanced diet and ont go hungry then I don't see a problem. I'm no expert though and would warn against getting too hung up on it- you are going to put on weight and need to get used to the idea.

No eating disorder, I know 25 is normal but it is big for me and for my frame IYSWIM.

To be fair, normal range is pretty wide (I think it's almost 3 stone for me!) so extrapolating from that (and it will vary with height) OP could easily be sitting at a stone or more over her pre-pregnancy weight whilst still being healthy.

25 for me is on the line for being overweight, thats about 2 stone heavier than I am, like pp said theres a 3 stone margin. I dont think the OP has an eating disorder at all, it sounds as though you are just being sensible op.

If I were you Id find a diet suitable for pregnancy (SW?) and go with that.

Good luck, and congrats.

I always lost weight in the first trimester, as long as you eat healthily etc its not a problem to lose weight in early pregnancy.

Congratulations :)

I think its fine as long as you're actually eating enough and you're not cutting out four groups. I carried on doing calorie counting until I was about 15bweeks, it did slow down but I lost about half a stone in that time.

If you are bigger than you'd like to be (as long as you're a healthy weight for your height/build) then carry on. Baby doesn't need an extra meal/truckload of snacks per day. Based on what you've said, to suggest you have an eating disorder is rubbish.

Medical advice is not to diet in pregnancy, although they also say don't eat junk so your healthy 3 meals a day and no snacks should be fine. Just make sure you're getting a lot of protein.

Thanks I guess there will come a point where the weight loss stops and then I start to gain weight from the baby itself, I am just wondering when that point is- 12 weeks, 20 weeks?

If you're eating three good meals and exercising normally you'll be healthy even if you continue to lose weight. You'll physically be healthier and in better condition for the birth which lessens the likelihood of anything going wrong.

It will also be easier to lose the weight after the birth. There are huge psychological benefits to getting your figure back quickly, feeling like a normal person again being one!

zora yes exactly, I put on 3.5 stone last time Shock, had a lot of complications in labour, including SD (although consultant said DS's size was not a factor, and it was more a positioning thing, I do wonder - he was quite big). I feel an obligation to do things better this time round.

Fgs Susie don't you have any empathy or tact?

And the op is a healthy bmi she just wants to lose a bit to be back at her pre-preg weight. Her baby is only just a year old so she has done really well.

Op I found I lost in first trimester, then stayed same weight till about twenty weeks, but its diff for everybody, what was your wright gain like in the first pregnancy!

if there is no eating disorder ( i do tend to ask after my sister is in recovery from bulimia whic developed into Anorexia)

it is fine to diet when pregnant but as you are in the normal range i wouldn't worry to much about it

Congratulations on your pregnancy. How lovely to have a surprise bump!
If you previously eating calorific junk food but are now enjoying a healthy, balanced diet, it stands to reason you will lose some weight. If you feel up to it, could you fit in some light, pregnancy-friendly exercise like swimming?

Good on you Peach, you deserve to take good care of yourself and you'll know that you've done your best. I gained a ridiculous amount of weight and it's so easy to lose control of it after a certain stage. If only I'd known then what I was getting myself into..... Hope it all goes well for you, stay focusedSmile
