Usual I think thats what irritates me most, I have only heard "grown ups" say it! I dont mind teens doing it, as you say they tend to have their own language!

My teenage pupils say fairly often. I really can't find anything annoying about it at all.

In fact I find it endearing when a teenager is willing to accept they may have made a mistake.

Americanisms are a bit annoying when the speaker is not American. Dd was pointing out 'trash' bags earlier. I did get a little bit of irrational rage. Then had an internal debate about whether it was petty to correct. Petty won.

I think it's just a short hand for when it's not really necessary to fully commit to an admission of guilt and a heartfelt apology, just to acknowledge that you were in the wrong - accidentally pushing in a queue for example or failing to notice that you were blocking someone's view of a supermarket aisle whilst trying to work out which tin of kidney beans is better value - inconsequential issues. It doesn't bother me in context, but I don't think it's acceptable when a proper apology is warranted.

I said it in a job interview once! My excuse - I'd had DS1 by emcs a couple of weeks before and the interview process was all day. This is when I discovered that the mixture of painkillers, issues of DS's birth and extreme lack of sleep had somewhat addled my brain. Needless to say, I didn't get the job

Mea culpa far worse. Particularly when said smugly about an achievement i.e. "Oh was it you that got a double first from Cambridge at age 16? " "Mea Culpa" (said with a smug and mock humble smile).....

I used to say it as a cool teenager. It was also used in a rap by Ludacris, so it is acceptable for adults to use.
