AIBU?

To ask you to tell this shop that having 'I love sluts' in their window is not ok?

Link here to my original thread: link

They are on Facebook here:

Amanda's of York Facebook page

There is a t-shirt in their window that has been there all week that says 'I love sluts' on it. I have been in twice to complain that it's offensive and been told I'm being obnoxious, it's just a t-shirt, people find it funny, it's a best seller, etc etc.

Maybe some people do find it funny; I don't. I think it's awful. It promotes woman-hating language and suggests it's ok to judge women on their sexual habits, call them names and treat them as worthless. I don't know any women or men who would find this funny, but apparently it's ok to offend everyone who walks past the shop in order to appeal to the few neanderthals out there who would laugh at it.

I know not everyone's a feminist, I know some people will think I'm having a sense of humour failure, and I know that in the grand scheme of things it's one small statement. But I feel like it stands for a lot more, and I am more incensed by it every day that I walk past it.

If it makes you angry too, please tell them. They also have a website, Amanda's of York, that has contact details if you would like to get in touch but don't have/want to Facebook.

I've done my bit. I'm not bothered about the ins and outs of such an item, I just find it offensive and it sure as hell shouldn't be in the window where kids can see it.

Btw let us know if it gets removed.

I'm not a feminist but I still find slogans like this awful! I think they are the obnoxious ones to be honest!

yabu, why would they care for the opinions of people who are not and never will be their customer base? It's silly.

See, this kind of shit is why I cried at DD's anomaly scan.

I really don't want my daughter growing up in a world that thinks this is a harmless joke.

While I agree that the slogan is offensive, I think you might find it is a reference to the slut walks?? Which are feminist reclaiming their bodies and language etc.

I am not sure I get it. Never been on a slut march, may have it wrong. But I am not sure it is a simple as you think

If they do take it down, I imagine it'll be because it's been there for a week so they would have changed the display anyway.

Or considering how much advertising this is bringing them, they might decide to leave it up for another few.

Yes but that is in different context Steppemum and anyway not all Feminists believe that the Slutwalks are effective.

OP yanbu. It's bollocks and I will be complaining. Stupid people.

RatherBeACyborg · 10/10/2012 11:46

But very few people will connect it with the slut march. (Which I don't like either). I have commented as well.

Worra that's my one concern. I'm hoping the negative publicity will outweigh the good...

Pretty certain it's nothing to do with the slutwalks by the way. It's definitely for men and I think the shop assistant would have told me when I went in to complain.

I object to the slogan AND to the fact that the shop has decided to stock it and put it in it's window. And yes, good idea to complain to the manufacturer too-thank you.
